I learned how to change my oil last change with my father in law (better late then never) and he has hulk like arms and i couldn't get the F'ing thing off this time. Good thing i got a good filter last time so I'm going to reuse it for a couple thousand and change it again with the tool and while I'm at it replace the awful plastic housing.

The plastic housing will last the life of the Taco. Get one of these instead:

    Works like a champ.

Honestly, still don't think its a torque problem, but a hot cold problem with the plastic. I'd torque to spec and was still not be able to get it off with a 2ft breaker! The tool ended up busting off the plastic tabs so I tore it out and put in metal. I know there are people that call BS on the hot cold theory but I got no other explanation that makes any sense! The struggle was REAL! Metal or Bust!

That is crazy. I don't see this really mattering that much in that situation, but did you oil up the o-ring? I am 100% serious that I used a standard 6in or 7in ratchet to back it off last time.

In my poll thread, most everyone that struggled was their first change after ToyotaCare was finished. I feel that was a solid enough trend for me but am definitely not calling BS on you.

We had a plastic cartridge on our old car that didn't even have the flutes, just the flats on the end and the same o ring and plastic flange meeting the metal bore. Never a problem doing ten oil changes on it.

I've had canisters take a set over time also. A few were hard to get off if I wasn't paying attention and did more than one full rev after contact. We all know someone that had to poke one with a screwdriver to get it off. Hahaha!

Yea, I always lube up the O-ring real good, you know this!!

So a little back story my first attempt after being done having the dealership do it for the freebies, I had to use the corded impact to get the housing off, oil EVERYWHERE not enough came out when I drained it! My I first thought was IM NOT TORQUING this to 900lbs like these asshole Toyota Techs so made sure everything was torqued proper like! 5k maybe 6k miles later on my next service after that was the breaker bar where I busted the tabs trying to get it off. Ran to Autozone bought a metal one dorman, seemed like the metal was to soft, so I got the genuine OEM and no problems since.

Hey! That's personal. Friction fit fo sho!

    :anonymous:

I've heard the Doorman ones are not good, except in a bad pinch.

Similar sort of story on my PoS bike. It had a metal on metal cartridge cover with an o ring and standard machine threads. It didn't have any problem with torque, but that mofo leaked, esp when the cyl head temps got way up there. I had to use some Permatex thread sealant. Thankfully that worked as the crossover pipe was right under the cartridge cap. Even better, the SS welds to the headers was shitastic and both cracked, so I had a crossover deleted.

I have a OEM Metal one sitting on the shelf in case I run into trouble with the factory piece.

The root cause is the stop flange on the plastic housing.

Both the reinforced nylon and the die cast aluminum housing have a stop flange. The nylon flange will experience elastic deformation when over-tightened, bending away from engine, then it will rebound and push against the engine. It makes a hell of grip. The cast aluminum won't flex away, so it doesn't create the same effect.

Both will hold a filter cartridge just fine.

I plan to convert to spin on filter once my last free dealership oil change is done.

I'm assuming you mean current motors. 2nd Gen Taco 1GR-FE does not use them, for example. I do believe the 1GR in the 4R uses them tho.

Fun fact - a funnel made from a Gatorade bottle fits perfectly in the oil fill tube of the 1GR motor. I've been wondering if it was purposefully designed that way since the motor is used all over the world.

I'm old, kids grown, house paid off and I bought a SR, not a Pro. I work 50-60 hours a week, don't own a boat or motorcycle, don't spend money on drugs and only drink an occasional beer or two. I'm not rich, just got up and went to work the last 40 years. You want sweet or sour skittles?

Just did my first oil change after the stealership changes ran out. What a PITA. I mean its not bad, but since I didn't think it would require a special tool just to do a friggen oil change, I had to make another trip into the store. Really stupid toyota.

Sometimes I get the feeling that engineers sit around thinking of how to make something so mundane and simple and turn it into a nightmare only someone with special training or skills could perform and then they laugh about it over cocktails till 2 am in the morning.

Just glad I have an aftermarket skidplate with a port so I don't have to take off the friggen thing just to do an oil change. From the factory. FOOLS!!!

Consider yourself lucky. I've done every oil change myself on my 17 and the drain plug has been seized from the factory. I just unscrew the whole oil filter canister and let it dump in one big gush. (Always a fun time.) One of these days I'll get around to replacing the canister.

Hm. Changed my oil 5 times now and no issues with my stock canister, mind you I never let the dealership do any maintenance on my truck.

I do have a metal one though Justin Case.
