I have a 2006 Tacoma Trd off road V6 RWD. It has 144K. It is not my daily driver but throughout the summer I do numerous 2 or 3 hour trips pulling a trailer with 3000-3500 lbs. I had the transmission and diff fluid changed about 20K ago. I know because I'm towing, my driving would fall under extreme conditions, so should I be changing my trans and diff fluid every 15-20K or can I go longer? I found something in the manual that advises on oil changes for this type of driving but not the trans and diff. I've heard differing opinions and when I had the last change done at the dealership the service adviser suggested every 30K for extreme driving. Does anyone have a definitive answer or good advice?

30k differential and trans service sounds like a reasonable interval for severe duty. I think normal service would be around 50-60k, that is the interval use with the differential in my 2.7 2wd.

With Toyota WS fluid, I would say 30k is a good idea.
Are you doing a full system fluid change, or a drain and fill?

Ideally, you’d want to know the fluid temperature to get a better idea of when to service the fluid.
If you don’t have a way to monitor Trans Temps. You should probably do a drain and fill at a minimum under Severe Use at/by 30k.

You might want to look into going with a different fluid if you plan to do a full fluid change.
Here is bit of information written on the subject by a very knowledgeable member here on the forum.

Thank you both for the input. I will most likely do a service in the next 5-10K

My '06 specs the following Normal intervals

    Xfer case, F & R diffs = 30,000 miles
    A/T fluid & filter = 100,000 miles.

If I were towing or hauling heavy on a regular basis, then I'd consider cutting the interval in half.

Oil/fluids are much cheaper than a trashed drivetrain unit. Too frequent oil/fluid change does no harm.
