Add another leaf? - Icon Stage 2 w/ Add a Leaf - not enough

    We installed an Icon Stage 2 suspension lift that of course came with the Icon Add a Leaf. It's not enough. When we toss on the Roof Top Tent, added RCI Rear Diff Skid plate, Rock Sliders, load up 5 gallons of reserve fuel and 20 gallons of water, camping gear, chairs, a few bundles of Firewood, etc to go get lost on a trail somewhere in BFE for 3 or 4 days.... Our rear still sags and we scrape now and then on obstacles.

    Is it possible to Add another leaf? Or would my next step be to scrap the entire leaf spring (stock and Icon Add a Leaf) and just add an entirely new leaf pack? Thoughts?

    Additional info: 2020 TRD Off Road - This is a Daily Driver as well as our 'adventure rig'. Don't normally haul anything normally and we don't pull any trailer of any type. Main weight comes from our general preparedness and load for weekend and week long trips to the back 40. I am planning on adding a high clearance bumper with swingout and likely a hybrid front bumper and wench hopefully next year.

    Sumosprings will affect your ride, and I would imagine the timbrens would as well, but I don't have personal experience with those. The sumos will firm the back end up, nothing jarring, but it is noticable. They replace your bump stops, you'll have to measure from the top of the leaf pack to the bottom of the frame rail at the bump stop. My guess is you'll need a spacer equivalent to your lift for the sumo spring to work. Other wise your truck will squat until it engages the sumo spring. Might be less squat, but unless you have a enough rake, it will squat.

    I ran the 500# sumo springs for a couple years with a single AAL. Worked fine for a couple hundred pounds in the bed. Sag once I added the camping gear.

    I use Firestone Ride Rites to help support the load. Similar concept as the other two options but an improved ride and load carrying capacity. And it supports variable weight up to 5000#. Min psi for DDing, 15-20 psi for the weekend trip to home Depot, 40-50 psi when loaded for the weekend. Not sure this is specifically what you will need in the future if you are adding more constant load with the bumpers and winch. A replacement leaf pack would work better for that. But the Airbags are good for those that have variable loads based on what you are using the truck for that day.

    Scrap that and get a new leaf pack. The stock leafs are garbage. This is OEM off my OR next to the Icon RXT on setting 3.

    I am about to order the Timbren for my wife's Tacoma. I personally have no experience with them on a Tacoma, but I know multiple people that I trust that swear by them, they also say the Summosprings aren't as good. I do have Timbrens on the front of my 2500HD Chevy, they softened up the impact of hash bumps quite a bit. They should not affect ride much as they are not attached to the frame, only the leaf springs, so you do not loose any down travel.

    I got them and I love them!, got Timbren on 3 of the 5 vehicles, all payed with my $, not sponsored. Got them on our Tacoma in front and rear, our Honda Pilot rear only and our motorhome.

    My best advice is do not run these!! OP is probably already close to payload capacity and Timbren/Sumo springs focus energy of a big hit onto your axel, arguably the weakest component of the rear end. And they limit suspension travel and articulation. Basically, the bigger bump-stops will become your suspension.

    But... couldn't you say the same thing about all rear suspension springs?? And airbags/helper springs?? They all attach to the axel...

    Not to mention it is not taking all the weight, just helping the leaf springs handle the weight.

    All I am saying is that there are countless trucks that have similarly mounted helper springs, rather it be air bags are Timbren with no issues. I've personally had airbags on my truck for hauling since 2017 with no issues.

    I just watched the video... His reason to not run them is because the truck will sit down on the bump stop when you have a load... THAT IS LITERALLY THE POINT OF THESE! To help support the load and reduce squat. Its basically a help spring.

    How is the Toyota 8.75" rear axle the weak point? And how do the Timbren or Sumos "focus energy of a big hit onto your axel" any differently then the OEM bump stops and leaf springs? Complete leaf pack is a way...not the correct or only way. There are multiple ways to solve this problem depending on what the individual is doing with the truck. My solution is airbags due to the changing load from daily driving to the weekend trip, similar to the OP. Variable air pressure allows you to compensate based on the load in the rear. Look at any Semi Truck, Dump Truck, etc. They all use Air Ride suspensions. My trailer doesn't even have a leaf or coil spring. It solely uses Firestone airbags.

    Obviously, he doesn't know that its the axels that are weight rated and meant to carry the load.

    Is that a thing? To add another Add a Leaf to the stock leaf pack that already had an add a leaf added? I'll look into that as well. I was under the impression that the ONLY option after adding a leaf to the stock leaf packs was to scrap them all and put an entirely new leaf pack in. Thanks for the suggestion I'll look further into that.

    I may be considering doing this AND the Timbren off road bump stops.
