Mount spare upside down?

    Is there any reason you can’t mount the spare with the valve stem on the bottom? My current set up has leaked before and I would like to be able to check/air it without dismounting it. Sorry if this has been addressed..

    A rubber or perhaps plastic spacer to cushion the impact on the front face might be helpful for this, if carrying an alloy spare. If using a steelie and you don’t care about cosmetics then no problem.

    You can put a TPMS in but it doesn’t help much since the Tacoma does not monitor more than 4 TPMS’s. Which irks me.

    I wonder if anyone makes a 5 tire, aux TPMS monitor…

    Yes. I have had it that way since I got the Taco. If you put the stem to the sides or front, there is almost no chance of hitting it off road.

    This one actually looks halfway decent, might be worth a shot to monitor your spare only?

    Personally, I’d prefer to carry a pump or compressor than stress too much about the pressure inside the spare before it’s installed.

    Though I do have 5 alloys for my summers (and 5 steelies for my winters, only 4 with TPMS)

    It would really be so much better if the Tacoma just monitored and displayed all 5. Sigh.

    Out of curiosity, @tonered , are you able to reach the valve without crawling underneath like elastigirl? I assume not so is this something you do regularly just to feel good about the spare? Or do you just give it a kick or punch to check?

    If you have an inflator chuck with the double end, you can inflate it in place.

    Are you referring to the impact of road debris, etc? If not, what impact?

    The claw at the end of the chain scratching the front surface of the wheel during raising / lowering. And the (admittedly small) clamping forces along with shifting due to temp changing volume of the tire.

    Likely minimal but some guys spend thousands on wheels.

    I love being able to do most anything under the Taco without the need for a jack. Just a pleasure compared to the ever lower cars that we have had in the past.

    I check all of our spares every 6mo. I do air checks every two or three weeks. That spotted two punctures on the other cars before needed to touch the spares.

    I flipped the tire shortly after getting my truck. Dropping it to do some work not long after I jammed the chain just as the tire started to come down. Then twisted the head off the chain lift rod.

    When flipping the tire to put valve stem down, the chain lifts it from the bottom of the tire and it will not stay level. Fairly certain the tire wobbling around is what caused the chain to bind up. Just watch out for that.

    Having the compressor puts my mind at ease for sure!

    Bought the truck new, and my very first oil change the Toyota Dealership did their 40 point inspection or whatever it is and noticed my spare had no air in it. From the factory that tire was useless, lol. They aired it up and it's held air ever since. It's now 10 years old. I'll be getting a new spare this year to replace it, even though it's never been used.
