Strange noise from rear differential

    Sounds like the pinion bearing. With that much shaving, take it out and inspect. You should be able to see where the shaving came from.

    I can't see or feel anything that is bad.
    No chunks in bottom of differential housing.

    kind of tough to tell from the picture but it looks like the driven side of the ring gear wipe pattern is the full length/width of the tooth, should not be that way.

    it may be an optical illusion, but in post #4 some of the large ring edges on the outside look worn to me. I don't seem to have anything like paint of my macbook to highlight what I'm seeing.
