The Hanes manual says to use a pin spinner to hold the pulley while removing the 22 mm bolt. I did this once when I did my head gaskets 5-6 years ago but I don't remember using a pin spinner. I went through my tool collection just to see if I may have obtained one just for that purpose but no, I don't have it. I do remember using a long pipe extension over the breaker bar because that thing is something like 170+ ft/lbs.

Can the crankshaft pulley be removed without something (pin spinner) to apply torque clockwise while untwisting the bolt counterclockwise or do I need one (and a helper to hold the spinner)?

You can jam a breaker bar against the frame and bump the starter to loosen it.

But no, if you dont have something to hold the pully you will just turn over the engine when you try to loosen it.

Pin spanner wrench or the actual bolt on tool will be needed.

Universal removal method. Have done successfully on multiple marquees.

    Some will scream crude.

I see it working, using items at hand, no ill effects.

Impact will work well too, it's just that in many cases working room is restrictive w/radiator in place.

Make sure you know what way the engine spins.
Disable the fuel injectors (pull relay)
Long breaker bar (pipe / what ever) against the frame.
BUMP the starter (don’t keep cranking it )
    Then do something like this.

AGAIN, make sure you are on the correct side of the frame.
In the picture below, the engine turns CLOCKWISE while cranking.
With the breaker bar positioned as pictured, the bolt will “loosen” COUNTERCLOCKWISE.

Getting it back on, isn’t as easy. I’d go with an electric impact LocTite and UGGA-DUGGA.

I think I'm just going by Autozone to get a pin spinner.

This will make it easier to torque the nut on when installing later.

I bought the lexus/toyota hold down tool instead of a pin spanner but I still had to brace it against the frame and push pretty hard on the socket wrench to break it loose, I couldn't fit my impact in there with the radiator in the way. If I have to do this again im removing the radiator first and using the impact gun.

I would have done this had I not disconnected everything else on the engine first. Would have saved a lot of cursing

I was able to do this by putting the truck in reverse. That provided the counter force. Then I put a long 3/4" black pipe over the breaker bar as an extension and was able to take it off all by myself.
