The temp sensor was removed from later 3rd Gens. I can't remember what MY, but there was a thread or at least a couple posts about it around here somewhere.

Ooops! I should have read the post you were quoting.

Ecgs, who I treat as the authority on all things diffs, makes you select whether or not you have a front diff sensor when building a front diff. That was good enough for me.

End of the first post I show logging front diff temp with techstream. We figured this was removed around the 2020 model year I think.

I will 100% verify my 2017 has a sensor installed and resulting readings that look reasonable and respond reasonably to tests (including heating up slightly more in 2lo)... it definitely appears gone (on some vehicles now), I don't know if we ever figured out exactly which years/trims/plants it disappeared at but I remember it seemed as being 2020+...

[OP, check that breather by blowing into the tube going up into the engine compartment. If it really blew off, it must be clogged and i would leave it off or pull off the breather valve in the engine compartment]

Most of the more technical chats seem to skip the smut. Not saying this is necessarily highly technical, but it does happen haha.

When driving in 4WD at high speeds on dry pavement, the front differential oil temperature may rise excessively, resulting in oil leaks or seizures. To avoid such occurrences, the 4WD control ECU monitors the oil temperature via the front differential oil temperature sensor and provides a front differential temperature warning buzzer and dash display. It can also limit various vehicle functionality depending on how long the oil temperature stays high.

The sensor was only present on 2016-2019 models.

I notice in the available Toyota monitor points in OBD Fusion it has the Front diff temperature, as well as a point for the number of times it’s exceeded alarm value.

Maybe the second item gives the dealer some leverage if you grenade your from diff and they see it’s been in alarm 20 times etc.
