    Hello Tacoma Forum!

I recently purchased my first Toyota vehicle and obviously it is a Tacoma. It did not have a garage door opener on the rearview as my previous car did so I went to a local junk yard and for $5 got one out of a totaled Subaru Outback. A little rewiring and the desire to modify my truck was born!

So, my question. I have added a number of LED off road lights to the front of my truck, and it has reinforced how feeble the standard halogen lights it came with are. Has anyone found suitable LED replacement bulbs for the third gen Tacoma’s? Any help would be appreciated!!

    Welcome!

    Short answer:
    1) OEM LED is best
    2) A Philips H9 halogen swap into your low beam is best with the halogen assemblies, and far higher performing than any replacement LED
    3) Morimoto 2stroke 3.0s are the best replacement LEDs available, but will be outperformed by the halogens.

Long answer, see all the data and discussion in this thread, specifically posts 1-3 (2 and 3 have updated halogen and LED test results)

Diode Dynamics. Great products and awesome customer support . One of my first mods was to swap to LED .

Diode Dynamics SL1 replacement LEDs are not recommended, they fail to outperform stock in the 3rd Gen headlights. See review posted here.

I do have one that is flickering intermittently, so I will be getting a warranty bulb. Not sure what the other company’s warranty policy is but Diode Dynamics always looked after me.

Ended up going with Sylvania Silverstar H9s in both the high and low beams. The improvement was definitely noticeable and the brightness acceptable. I don’t do a lot of night driving and we do get icing in the winter here. I think I will wait until I find an LED headlight assembly that I really love before I go with LED headlights. Although, I did upgrade every other bulb in the truck to LED aside from the dash lights.
