Some questions about diff seals

I'm having some parts issues, and I feel like I'm losing my mind here. I've read in a number of threads that the seals on both sides of my diff are the same (2011 TRD OR). I got (2)

$12 90311-47027 Toyota Oil Seal - 90311-47027

90311-47027. However, the seal is way too small for the passenger side. This parts diagrams seems to show the same seal in the photo, but 3 different seals down below. What am I missing?



Side question,.on both sides, this pocket had loads of grease in it when I pulled the bearing out. I'm guessing this is grease seeped out of the old bearings? I can't seem to see a reason why it would need to be greased in there?

 

The driver and passenger differential seals are different parts and also require to be driven in at different depths.

 

Passenger side -

90311-47027 replaces 90311-47012 So looks like you ordered two drivers side seals.

 

Thank you. I'll call for the 47013 tomorrow. Can you tell me where to find information about the depths? I installed the driver's side already. I installed it so the outer edge of the seal is flush with the housing. That's where it looked like my old one was. I haven't installed the axle yet though, so I can still fix it.

 

Passenger side

Mine ended up at 0.228", right on the edge of acceptance.



Driver side, I would recommend you press in a bit further. They are known to leak if not driven to the correct depth. Very finicky seals.

 

As far as the grease, that could have been previous owner when the bearings were last replaced, or just grease combined with contamination from a failed bearing.

Dealership gives me 90311-47026 as a replacement for 47013. Is that correct? And if so, being that I can't find one and need my truck together, how are National seals? Supposedly 710595 is a replacement for 90311-47026.

 

That I'm not sure of, I'd assume they know correct. Last time I had to buy one it was the 47013.


Rock auto seems to confirm your suspicions so hopefully that they are the correct size. I have used national seals before and they are currently installed on my steering knuckle side where the CV goes into, I've had good luck with them. I'd assume their quality on the differential seal is the same.

I wanted to apologize I was looking back through my posts and I gave you some bum info. The seal depth I listed for the driver side I mistakenly posted the pinion flange depth. The driver axle seal is "flush with carrier". Hopefully I didn't cause you any leaks!

 

Hmm, I don't seem to have any leaks. Think it's ok how it is if it's not leaking?

 

my theory was if it wasn’t leaking leave it be. Sometimes, just removing and reinstalling a cv axle is enough to cause a leak, I don’t know why those seals are so finicky compared to others. Perhaps because of the small play and movement of the CV relative to the sealing surface.
