Need to replace the crank pulley on my 2.7 and have questions. Is there a seal on the front of the oil pump cover? I would think there has to be. The parts diagram shows a seal (6) behind the oil pump gears. If that is right how do I get to it to replace it? Anyone have experience with Dorman replacement crank pulley? I considering going the Dorman route for $82 vs OEM for 3 time the price.

You need to remove the oil pump cover and oil pump to access the seal according to that drawing… it doesn’t look like a big deal. Rent a puller if you don’t have one and go to town. Make sure to pick up o-ring for pump cover (#4) the seal is #6. Good luck

Can't speak to the seal portion of this but I had the Dorman pulley installed about a year ago on my 2.7. Somehow I convinced Toyota to install it despite it not being an OEM part.

No problems with it so far.

I’m still researching but I think the diagram is wrong or misleading. The seal goes in the pump cover.

You are correct. The seal is on the pump cover. Its easier to remove that seal if you take the pump cover off and tap the seal out from the "inside". Be careful to not strip the screws when removing the oil pump cover. Replace with Allen head screws.

There is no seal if your just pulling the harmonic balancer off (crank pulley)
It just pulls off.....I got the loan a tool...harmonic balance puller from auto zone....

When you put the new one on you have to be super careful and seat on that crank key carefully.

And you really need that tool to torque it back on correctly....

For Lexus Toyota Harmonic Damper Pulley Holding Tool Set Crankshaft Crank
    Holder | eBay

As far as seals theres 3 in that area ....pump cover seal/gasket (cookie gasket)....the main front engine seal ....and then inside the actual oil pump there is a ring seal that turbine sets against......other side of the turbine is metal to metal seal because of oil surface tension.....crazy...

The foot of the pulley(H.B.) slides on the crank and everything around it is already sealed....there is no oil touching base of the H.B....and it seats against the front main engine seal.....

it slides into and thru the oil pump which is totally sealed....

If you take off the oil pump cover then yes ....new seals needed everywhere....

I may be wrong I dont think you have to take off oil pump cover to get to main engine front seal....I think you can dig out and replace if leaking....

Luckily nothing is leaking, just the crank pulley is shot. I would hate like hell to install the new one and put this all back together only to find out it leaks so I will go ahead and replace the pump cover seal. I think its probably a good insurance policy for $12.

When I took my wasted H.B. off everything looked OK.....
however was I wrong....I guess it had wobbled so bad it had cracked out the inside of time cover right were the oil pump seated against it...could not tell until I removed time cover to get that last screw out.....and you still couldnt tell...took several days of messing with it to see that tiny internal hair line crack right next to pump gear...on back side of time cover...

That's how I'm so familiar with the setup....that's when I had to express ship a timing cover, and if I'm going that far.... a new asin oil pump to go in it.....and those fancy allen screws......

never as easy as they tell you brother....

Be careful when you seat the new H.B. who ever did mine in past damage the crank shaft key so bad...it wollowed out the key seat on the crankshaft and destroyed the engine....with only 150k on it.....
When you'd put a new H.B. on my old engine ....it would run ..... for a while.....
and then one day... the dash lights all go RED.....means it twisted on the key....

I would actually file a tiny bit on the new HB's key seat....so it wasnt dependent on a perfect stab.....
