So just got back from Discount Tire, had to have a TPMS sensor they put in three weeks ago replaced. During the process one technician swapped out with another one or lended a hand. Ended up cross-threading one of the studs and destroyed the threads. I did have to drive 48 miles home, so I am assuming when they told me it was “safe” ... it would be okay.

Well, the place they told me to go to to have it fixed for free, just let them know DT did it. Well they can’t fit me in until Oct 7th.

I am NOT going to do any fun stuff this weekend now, just don’t feel that comfortable going off pavement, with the Tacoma like this. But, how comfortable would everyone else be just daily driving?

2nd battery added(yellow top), big 3 upgrade completed w/ofhc 0awg, 1000 watt pure sine wave inverter added, medical oxygen system added, led marker lights. 60% rear seat deleted. Upgraded both battery terminals. Yellow top primary battery. 200Amp Alternator upgrade.
I would roll it. But you could make them pay for a rental.

Not comfy at all. there is a reason for all the lugs to be tightened.

Ask for a rental. It happens so be a nice and understanding person.

I’d take that back and raise hell. Not the first time. I’m almost certain but it was a few months later I had 4 wheel studs sheer off driving to Oregon. Last place was 4wp to touch them. Both places probably used an impact to put them on. Stand your ground they will fix it but they try to push it off. it’s a 30 min job to swap them out.

Yup pretty fast job. Last resort take it to dealer and give DT the invoice. Never had an issue when DT did something screwy.

Is @Discount Tire still on here?

It’s not terribly difficult to do it yourself. I have a special tool to use but it’s not necessarily needed. You can knock out the broken piece, measure your existing good studs, length and thread pitch, bring the two broken pieces to an auto parts store. You might need to settle for a dorman part. ARP makes much better ones but finding one local would be challenging.

That ordeal with discount tire sucks. They should have fixed it on the spot.

Chances are whatever you throw at that wheel while driving, it’s not gonna cause a problem.

Contractor probably has other scheduled jobs lined up. not sure why DT can’t just dismount the wheel and put new stud on or call a mobile contractor to to the job at DT. DT always tries to do the legally your tires are to bald to drive on yet let you leave with a wheel that is not safely mounted for travel.

Update: Talked to DT again today and told them what their shop told me about having to wait a week out, made an appointment with dealership and two hashed it out to get truck fixed Monday.

I've seen people drive on stuff like that all the time. Some Tacoma's only have 5 lugs anyway. Only risk is that the tech may have accidentally made that mistake on the other studs too and they just haven't busted yet. Either you or whoever fixes it should inspect the others for similar problems.

Discount tire did that to mine earlier this year. Now when I go in for a tire rotation, I tell them I want all the life that started by hand and I stand there and watch them.
