It’s night and day difference with new spark plugs especially for boosted engines.

When I swapped mine out on the truck they were roasted. Mine was in the mid 60's (pretty sure they were not changed around 30k)

All 6 plugs looked like this when I pulled em. They had 40k on em.

Does anyone know if there is a heat range 8 Ruthenium plug? I'd like to give these a go on my boosted 4 cylinder, but it uses Denso IKH24 which is one step colder than the rutheniums listed on page 1. Any info would be appreciated

If you have a cheapie scanner that's a little better than the bottom of the barrel it should be able to show you those values. HPT is not needed for that.

Oh then you are going to have to invest a little bit of money if you want to be able to check it out.

That's why I was asking if I could do it with the HP Tuner...

I have experienced this MANY MANY times. I have even documented it with data logs from my UCON and analyzed it with Scott. I'm pretty certain this is due to the vehicle stability control system on these trucks along with the application of power. I think that if the torque vectoring along with steering wheel angle and yaw sensors sense accelerometer changes beyond a certain limit, it will cut timing and throttle then try to reapply it in quic succession. The result is instant power loss, fall on your face power loss, then many applications of torque until you let off and stabilize. If someone has an early model that doesn't have accelerometers, then maybe its just torque management? I haven't got my hands around it fully, but it sucks big time.

If it’s traction control, I can see that in the log, and tune the mapping of the traction control’s influence on the throttle.

If it’s stability control there won’t be anything you can do, other than removing the fuse for the ABS ECU but that has other implications..

I might be able to test this theory. I went through and did all the traction mods years and years ago (Locker Anytime and ABS killswitch). The Killswitch turns off ALL my traction aids.. making it 1 tire fire. BUT.. if none of that BS is lingering.. and thats whats doing it.. then it shouldnt do the pulsing/surging shit.. right? maybe? lol

I'm actually kind of excited. Might try to do a bit of an overhaul on the s/c at the same time. It's been on the truck since the beginning as far as I know.

It's definitely worth the price. Powerful piece of software.

Hm. Interesting. I can easily believe it.

I'm already running the HP Tuner.. thats why I'm asking. I dont want to have to buy another scanner if HP's software can do it already.

from Justin's post.. that answers my question. I'll try some testing this week with the traction control and see if I can get some logs with the HP Tuner.

4runner/fj Trac and stability systems are far more aggressive than in the Tacoma. In the Tacoma you can just hold the vsc for like 5 secs and be pretty free of the burden of interventions of the Trac and stability systems. 4runner and fj needs to physically be unplugged.

I experienced something similar to what these guys are experiencing and the issue ended up being sticking VVT solenoids which were just old. I replaced plugs, coils (when I changed out to the RIPPs) cleaned the throttle body and even the MAF (because I did my intake conversion) but I still did it anyways. The solenoids still worked and applied power like they were supposed to at the upper end, but they would make the engine stutter and hesitate at random. I started picking it up even in part throttle situations towards the end actually also. Interestingly enough, after submitting several logs over to Justin through HPT he was never able to pinpoint anything that was causing it, he could see it, and made a band aid solution for it, but it never did fully remedy it. There were no codes stored either.

The computers on these trucks suck at picking up and identifying issues. More so at even flagging anomaly's and throwing fault codes. Kind of like how Ford's PCMs could misfire FOREVER and they will never throw a code for them but would show the misfires on the mode 6 counters for sure.

I don't believe HPT is capable of picking up Mode 6 monitors. I do know they are capable of reading readiness, however, but that's not what you need.

The solenoids are insanely easy to get to. Remove the intake boot, the throttle body and then release a few connectors at the CMPs, two bolts at the solenoid brackets remove and replace, reverse install, done.

The handheld scanner I use is called the Creader VI by Launch. It gives me singular misfire monitor history data, but not individual. I'm not sure how much they run for but being that it's a handheld they should be relatively cheap.
