I just noticed this on my truck today. Im pretty sure its not the clear coat because there is no difference on height when you run your finger across it. I wax my truck at least 3 x a year. Any ideas? There is some spots on my roof also.

Sure looks like failed clear coat, it's usually not a coincidence that it's always the upper facing panels that get beat down by the sun the ones to go first. I've heard that once you hit a certain point there is still clear there but the UV inhibitors are all gone so it fades.

Get some Maguiar's Ultimate Compound and a white cutting pad if you can. Start off with the buffer on 2 to move the product around, then move up to 4 or 5. That should take the color out of the whiteish area, then use a red or black pad with the Maguiar's Ultimate Polish doing the same numbers on the polisher. If you have to compound a few times to get the white out do so with no pressure on the machine let it do the work for you. If you have to polish a few times that's okay as well with machine pressure only. Finally finish up with the Ultimate Wax and you should be good to go. Maybe spray an iron remover on it first and then clay bar it before moving on to the 3 step process.

With very fine sandpaper you can “feather” the area then shoot another coat of clear.

OP, Please don't even consider this as an option until you have tried polishing the area first. You really need to verify / identify what your real problem is before diving into highly invasive repair techniques. Simple polishing will give you a much better idea of what the problem is - and is not.

As for sanding and attempting to apply new clearcoat in small areas, you're never going to be able to properly feather the new clearcoat.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try unchaineds method. I use maguiars ultimate paste. I will stick with that method first.

I haven't tried anything yet. I need to show a professional detailer or something. Parked in the garage for awhile

IMO. That’s not a failing clear coat. Where do you normally park? Appears something has gotten on the clear and caused some discoloration.

Whats weird is , I just bought a car cover for it about 6 months ago. I dont work so its mostly in the driveway with the cover on it. Im wondering if the cover did something to my paint. That is where the cover sits directly on my truck. I tossed the cover.

Is clear coating even worth it? Why?

looks like it's just material from the car cover. it will probably buff out.

Can I just add that…I wish I hadn’t used a touch up paint pen to use on some paint scratches that weren’t even down past the lighter primer. My “Lunar Mist” touch ups look like shit.. If you have a 1st gen “Lunar Mist” body paint and small thin scratches showing the primer…I’d leave it be. The touch up will look twice as shitty noticeable, no matter if it’s Toyota or another paint company assuring “original “Lunar Mist” paint color. . The touch-ups are noticeably darker. I think “Lunar Mist” color was tweaked somewhere between 2003 and now. And, all they have is “now.”
