A 2GR-FKS V6 (this one actually out of a hydro-locked Sienna minivan) is torn down. Shows you some of what it takes to make an engine that can handle minivan levels of abuse, and also find it’s way into lighter duty applications like Tacoma.

I enjoyed this quite a bit. I also wonder who the hell hydro-locked their Sienna?

FUN fact, i know Marc. i gave him that motor. woman towed her car into work after some flooding and well. the puddle she hit was a little bigger than she thought. shame it was as rusty as it was.. i tried to get all the water out but apparently it wasn't enough.. im actually going to be taking the motor back to try and get it running with some non toyota approved methods since i have another blown up 2gr-fks i can use for parts (from a hyrdolocked camry.. this ones blocks damaged. but i have usable rods and pistons)

im actually going Monday to see him and the car im buying off him.

Yea he’s a good guy. Videos are very informative. The fks doesn’t offer much gain over the FE. So sadly I don’t think you’ll see performance goodies from him on the fks any time soon. But what that mans done for the AR and GR motors is amazing.
He use to endurance race the 2gr-fe. That motor can take serious abuse. He’s running the AR these days. But his work with fitting these things into the mr2s and tuning them has shown how much abuse these suckers can take

People say minivan like it’s some sort of a burn. Those things take a helluva beating!

If you saw what comes into my shop you’d be amazed. I’ve seen the older 3.5 in taxi vans with zero maintenance over 200-300k miles running just as good as the day they were built.
The GR motors are truely fantastic engines. (Even if I feel the power band isn’t ideal for tacomas, they do work)

    1) Thanks for posting this, really interesting video.
    2) That guy really knows his engines.
    3) Damn, there is a lot of stuff inside these modern engines, nothing like an old Dodge slant six or Ford 289...
    4) I now feel really old and out of touch...:pout:

Yeah I know! Have been driving Toyota’s since the 22R days the 2GR-FKS feels like a rocket ship to me. Went to pass some farm equipment yesterday going painfully slow around 20mph, jammed on the throttle and holy shit! Next thing I knew it was doing 80. Kinda impressed that it likes to cruise around 1300 RPM, where I would do 2000 in my 5VZ-FE. Seems like most of the complaints about power and speed are coming from the sports sedan crowd who bought a Tacoma as their first “truck”.

People complain that it is a car engine…the trucks where sharing car engines for quite some time. And really you don’t buy a Tacoma to do any actual work, even 1 tonners weren’t big enough in my old line of work, used them to service the bigger machinery. Started buying Toyota’s because it was nice to jump into something small and zippy after operating heavy equipment all day long. They are great as a plunk around town and play vehicle.

Awesome video. I've been waiting for these kind of videos to start rolling out. I can't wait until this forum has more DIY repair instructional threads, and less...well BS that's on here now

How does flooding and hitting a puddle damage the engine?

Water sucked into intake. Just like four wheeling and fording a river or bombing a huge puddle.

Water doesn't compress, so the piston rod will bend or break in severe cases. Sometimes you get luck though and just have pull the plugs and turn over the engine to blow out the water.

Liquids cannot be compressed so bad things are usually going to happen if you happen to suck water in the engine.

Dumped my dirt bike in a creek crossing the other day, nice thing about 2-Strokes they tend not to break stuff when you hydro lock them. Just pull the plug, pump out the water, toss in a dry plug and you’re good to go. 4-Stroke you’ll typically bend a valve or worse the rod.

About a cup of water came out of it. Whoops-see…

They actually do. (completely aside from motor application discussion)

    1. Not an enthusiast vehicle and often neglected
    2. Owned/driven by people with busy kid-centric lives and therefore often neglected
    3. Usually carrying a lot of weight (people)

Hitting a puddle to fast, the water rushing over the hood can get into the intake. Usually stalls the engine before any damage is done. But everyone tries to restart the motor when it happens and that’s all she wrote. This one was filled to the top in water in cylinder 1
