Toyota TRD OEM lift kit

Did you need to remove the bolt that holds the leaf pack together to install these shims? It almost looks like you could just loosen the ubolts and slip them in. I know this is the TRD lift thread but wondering if anyone has installed shims like this on a stock height truck that had the 30-10 MPH vibrations. I think it'd be easy enough to try this and/or the carrier bearing drop before really hassling with the dealer and their BS.

Any reason the Headstrong 1.5" AAL wouldn't be compatible with this kit? I want to replace the block with an AAL.

 

Yes, you have to remove the leaf pack bolt to remove or install a new shim.

 

no reason! actually what this should have come with as an option in the 1st place! get 2 or 3 degree shims and install at the same time

 

I previously did not see the shim in the OEM parts diagram... However, I checked today again while rotating my tires on a 2021 TRD Off-Road AC and there is a small black shim just as you mentioned that came stock on my truck at time of purchased (before any aftermarket lift and/or shim was added).

You are correct, at least for the Tacoma I own.

 

Sorry to dumb it down and get off-topic here but can someone give me a crash course in these axle shims? I had a Westcott Designs block/spacer/perch lift installed on my '21 since new and during the last few months a vibration has crept in at slower speeds (seems to peak at 50 km/h). I thought it was a bad wheel bearing at first but I can't pinpoint it to either corner. Thanks in advance, gang!

Sorry for the delay - I got bogged down with a cold and spent much of the week playing catch up.

I did not mess with the leaf pack bolt (center pin). I used Belltech shims which are sorta "U" shaped. They have "fingers" on the larger side of the shims that slip into place when the axle's U-bolts are loosened (as you suggested). The fingers slide past the center pin, and the center pin ultimately rests at the "base" of "U" created by the fingers. Have a look at the Belltech shims using the following link - hopefully that description will make some sense.

The head of the center pin appears to be about 8mm tall. The shim is about 4mm thick where the center pin rests, which leaves about 4mm of the center pin to seat in the spacer. Due to the way the shims are sandwiched between the spacer and the leaf pack, they are not likely to work themselves loose or out of position unless they break; however, I am not a fan of this setup. I don't expect it to ever be a problem, but I am not inclined to leave it this way because I don't like the idea of reduced pin depth or having a piece of thin aluminum sandwiched between flat pieces of steel.

I am trying to find a diagram of the TRD Lift rear spacer blocks with dimensions and measurements that will allow me to manufacture a comparable block with the correction angle built into the block's dimensions. In my mind, this would be a better solution than shims. I have been unable to locate such a diagram thus far, so I may just have to pull one off of my truck and use it as a template when the weather warms up.

Based on what I've observed, I think you could shim your stock truck in exactly the same way I did mine. I would recommend shims over the carrier bearing drop. The carrier bearing drop changes the angle of the u-joint at the transfer case flange and ends up introducing another variable to an already murky mix. Toyota's literature seems to suggest (by deduction) that the propeller shaft / pinion flange angle (JA) is the key to solving vibrations, and that means (to me) focusing on shim work.

Since the shims resolved my truck's vibrations, I feel MUCH better about the truck. I am now trying to decide on tires and wheels. Specifically, I am trying to determine if the TRD Lift will enable me to put 275/70 R17 tires on 17x8 wheels w/ 0 offset without having to cut anything to achieve full articulation (stuffing the tires). I've been doing a lot of reading on the subject, but I have yet to find a definitive answer.

Again, thanks for all your info on this. Very informative. Others here stated there are angled lift blocks too but to find an exact match, you might be better off fabricating your own like you said. The truck I'm working on is going to the dealer today primarily for the rear drum brakes being out of round and to a lesser extent, the 30-20 MPH vibration. I'm confident they'll be able to resolve the rear brakes but the 30-20 vibration I have my doubts. They could potentially apply the TSB fix even though I don't think it applies to 2022s yet. I believe that fix includes new stiffer rear leaf springs which we're not excited about. The soft stock ride is nice. I doubt the dealer will try shims, driveline balancing or other possible fixes but who knows. After they're done with it and if they can't resolve it, we'll probably try the shims. The vibration on this truck is very minor and honestly, I think many drivers either wouldn't notice or if they did, just assume it's normal.

I know what you mean about the vibrations being small enough that other drivers may not even notice them - mine were like that. The challenge for me (I fully admit that I am a pain in the a**) is that I know vibrations are almost always destructive, especially when they exist within a system containing rotating mass.

I hope your dealer experience is better than mine was; however, I won't be surprised if they tell you there is nothing wrong with your truck.

The fact that Toyota refused to acknowledge the issue in my truck is unfortunate and has done significant damage to their brand in my eyes. This issue is clearly widespread and not just an anomaly with my truck.

After my primary dealer refused to acknowledge the issue, I contacted Toyota customer relations and opened a case. Their answer was to try another dealer. I did - and that dealer also concluded there was nothing wrong. Toyota considers the case closed since two dealers failed to identify an issue with the truck. Fortunately, I have the skill to diagnose and troubleshoot myself.

I have a 2022 Army Green Tacoma TRD Off-Road arriving on lot in 2 weeks. My dealer is installing the OEM Lift Kit (2in - front, 1in - rear). I also was able to find a set of Stealth Custom Series Ray 10's in a size 17x8.5 -10mm offset wheels that I am going to put on after receiving the truck. I would like to put on BFGoodrich KO2 tires on these wheels but was wondering if anyone would be able to help suggest a size? I don't want anything crazy big on the wheels but something that'll beef up the look. Also was wondering if anyone else had any suggestions/information on what additional mods I may need to make with adding the SCS Ray 10 wheels and beefier KO2 tires? Would it have been smarter to go with a 16in wheel instead of the 17in? Maybe some pros and cons? Is this mod going to change anything drastically? Thanks for the help!

 

Congrats! Will your truck have 2 pedals or 3? It will be interesting (to me) to know if your truck has any drive line vibrations like mine did.

Don't see why it wouldn't fit all 3rd gens 2016-2022's. The only extra parts you would have is the sensor with the trucks not equipped with it, (2016-2017).
