I upgraded my head unit long before the speakers, so I can't say with any certainty on the stock head unit. That said, I ran them direct from the head unit and then moved over to an amp and have been pleased with them on both setups. FWIW, they are rated for more power than the amp can throw at them, but did not sound underpowered by the head unit.

Would you say it was a fair amount of improvement running off just the head unit before you used and amp over the stock speakers off the head unit?

In all honesty, not really. I want to say yes for obvious reasons. I think these will give as much improvement as any speaker will on a stock head unit, and I'm including all the extra parts to make them plug and play with the OEM head unit. I've really been quite impressed with them, but the stock head unit is going to be your limiting factor here.

With that being said, I had a pair of Kenwood 6x9 door speakers that got returned pretty quickly. There was zero improvement over the stock speakers as far as I could discern. These did have *some* improvement over stock.

I appreciate your candor. I guess since I have no plans to change from the stock head unit or add and amp at this time, I will probably just still with the stock set up for right now.
Thanks for all the info though!

I have these and have lost a ton of hearing from combat/explosives and dumb stuff. They do improve the sound quality and clarity in the cabin.

I like them enough that I'm going to get the components of the same series speaker.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!

my one critique on this is they should have done burnout marks…you ain’t puffin’ smoke with output laying down slicks!

…this gives me inspiration, to do my own. I’m gonna use my fj40 die cast, have it roll up Hershey Mtn, across the pretzel bridge over the twizzler lava!

Anyone need spare suspension parts? Free! 2nd gen front shocks, rear leaf springs. Aprox. 38k miles, I think I’ve got the UCA’s as well. I’d also accept a hand installing sliders as payment

I'm running the stock head unit on my '13 and only upgraded to Rockford Fosgates in the doors (but while inside, I slapped Noico sound deadening in my doors - along w/ the roof and rear cab panel) and it sounds a good bit better...definitely more "punch". Considering the subaru tweeter swap soon as well as the Kenwood KSC-SW11 powered sub (can connect via add-a-fuse rather than straight to the battery)...but w/ the current job, my truck only gets driven on weekends and I can't justify spending money on audio I'll only hear 2 days a week.
