Phone Holder

Sure would be nice if everyone was like you. But they aren't. We all have different scenarios. I don't need directions when I go to the store, but not all of us always go to the same spots. I used to drive 25k+ miles every year for work, going to different job sites all the time. I used to have to spend a lot of time preparing directions in advance, carry Thomas guide maps...etc. Having GPS has been a life saver. It's more accurate, faster, helps route around traffic... And, using a mounted GPS vs a paper map in a car while driving is much, much safer.

Don't poo-poo this tech just because you don't like it or need it. It's really helpful for many of us and we're capable of being responsible adults while doing so.

YOU completely misunderstand. I am not poo-pooing the tech. I'm sure you will be able to twist my posts to skew the meaning to support your justification.

I am saying to avoid phone calls, email, texts, tweets......fiddling with the buttons, scrolling.......

Keep your eyes and focus on the task, which is driving. YOU are in control of a 4000+ lb missile.

I would not advocate using a paper map while the vehicle is rolling or reading a book or reading a newspaper or applying makeup....... I have seen all these actions. The most eye opening distraction I witnessed was a couple making the 2 backed beast on I-35S in KS at 70 mph. I'm completely convinced the driver was focused on traffic.

I used to have a suction style phone mount on my window, but using a sunshade killed that.

Since I upgraded my stock head unit to a Pioneer with Apple Carplay, I don't need to worry about staring at my small phone screen while driving anymore, but still wanted the phone mounted.

Always thought that the small cupholder between the shifter and armrest was the dumbest thing ever, so to kill two birds with one stone I put a cup style mount there. Gave that tiny cupholder a legit purpose, and the phone is so low it's kinda out of sight, out of mind...Apple Carplay takes over from there to keep your eyes more focused on the road, and the hands-free functionality is the bee's knees.

 

I like the Expedition Essentials TPAM setup. Works great for phone and radios. Still have space left over, and comes with two USB ports.

Another vote for the Expedition Essential set-up. This is just the RAM Track mount version. I've run Rokform phone cases for about a decade so I use their 1" ball adapter for my S21 Galaxy. Can also mount an iPad or Galaxy as well.

 

To answer my the op’s question, I had one similar to this in my work truck. It’s supposed to grip and hold the sides but I had it set slightly loose so it could slide in, stay in, and slide out fairly easily. That one broke after about 8 years.

I could make a mountain of phone holders I bought, used less than a week, and got rid of.

Now I use a ram mount. It holds tight, very adjustable. No slide in and out with one hand, two hands required for in and out.

I used to use a Thomas guide. Flipping pages holding that thing while driving was far more dangerous than what I do now.

For those saying I leave it in my pocket. This is also considered illegal, or I should say I recall hearing a law passed that it has to be in a holder.

Distracted driving is definitely a problem. I drive to as many as 7 different locations a day, 5 days a week for work. But I navigate responsibility, set the address in, mount the phone and go. No twitching, instacarting, texting while on the road. Being on the road that much, I see a lot. People driving with their elbows and both hands both eyes on the phone. Why? Because there are no consequences for their actions. A large percentage is kids driving a car they didn’t pay for. Or the entitled selfish crowd who care about nothing but themselves. From what I’ve seen, police no longer care about people on their phones because they do it themselves.

It’s unfortunate but, I think until someone related to someone with some juice gets killed by a distracted driver, nothing is going to change. In my opinion, the penalty needs to be severe. Also penalties need to be more fairly administered. So first offense, $100 fine, which is really just a warning. Second offense 3 day vehicle impound, a fine of 10% of the vehicle value. Third offense 7 day impound, fine of 25% vehicle value, 30 day suspended license. Forth offense, forfeiture of the vehicle, 6 month suspended license, forfeiture of the right to own, borrow, or touch a cellular device.

These are great in four of my vehicles. Small, out of the way and will hold bigger phones (not wheeling).
It does require to have a metal disc on the back of your phone or in the phone case.

Got one of these with the "pole" mounted to the inner passenger seat bracket bolt. Used it for a tablet to play movies on long drives (I just listen to the audio playing through the bluetooth audio input) but also holds larger smartphones.

It doesn't even get in the way of the passenger seat since it angles in towards the center console.

I tried 2 different cd slot holders. Nothing like your phone falling with the added weight of a holder. Trashed both.
