Preferred RTV sealant for timing chain cover

What is a preferred RTV sealant for the timing chain cover on V6 models? I noticed different types and not sure what to look for. I did this once before and the one I used was, as I recollect, brownish in color.

 

Ultra Black should be fine.
I like the OE FIPG, but it’s expensive, and you have to work kind of fast.
I’ve never used the OE stuff on a big job, I’d just make sure you have the surface prepped and ready to go once you apply it.

 

dealer front counter parts guy told me OEM FIPG is the best quality and longest lasting

I’ve used black RTV on other stuff before

German cars spec a shitty cheap black sealant that lasts like only 40-100k miles

 

Is Permatex the preferred brand?

 

I remember torspd who I think knows the 4.0 well used grey when he rebuilt his. I believe he used it as an extra layer of protection against the leak.

Use the 00080 on oil sections and 00100 on water pump sections (or their equivalents).

 

00080 is old, the updated # is

I’ve heard Permatex “The Right Stuff” is as close as you can get on a budget.
It too, is immediate return to service. I don’t know anyone that can get all the stuff bolted back on the front of the engine “immediately”. It’d take me hours

 

Yes, I'm aware the 00080 has been superseded. I just wanted to point out to OP which rows on that chart he needs to go with and he can cross reference them to whatever equivalent he decides to go with.

J-B Weld 31919 Black RTV Silicone Sealant and Adhesive - 10.3 oz.

J-B Weld acceptable at half price?

Notice I said come off, I don’t say it won’t leak.

 

Black for cover, grey for water pump inlets is Toyota standard.

 

Another vote for permatex the right stuff.

 

So I am thinking to go with a small tube (3 oz) of Ultra Gray for the pump inlets and a large (caulking sized, 10 oz) tube of The Right Stuff Black for everywhere else.

But is the Right Stuff really that much preferable to the Ultra?

 

When my brother and I did my truck we used the OEM black but after doing it I wouldn't hesitate with the Permatex black.

FYI there's a nice damper removal tool on Amazon for about $40. I wasn't a fan of the bumping the starter method.
