I just got my windshield replaced and the new one has a Go Pro mount. I’d been thinking of getting a dashcam anyway, is there a particular model Go Pro I should get? When it’s installed does it just turn on and record whenever I drive or do I have to manually press record every time? Does it save straight to a SD card and just overwrite the oldest footage when it runs out of space?

My dash cam (non-go pro) does everything you mentioned automatically.

I tried a GoPro for a short time, but like many other cameras, it will heat up and stop working. Right now, I have my eye on a Garmin Dash Cam Mini 2. You can see a YouTube video on it.

I have this cheap dash cam. So far has worked great for 3 years and does everything you wanted.

I do make sure to remove it on really hot days as it gets flakey after baking in the cab on 100 plus degree days.

Got it to fit in the GoPro mount by getting a Grab Bag of connectors.

There are better dash cams available. I bought it with the intention of moving to a higher end brand but never felt the need.

Do you take the card out occasionally and spot check it to see that it is still recording and hasn't stopped?

Second vote for Garmin Mini. Just records an endless loop on the SD card, continually deleting the older stuff. Starts recording when you start the car. I guess it has motion sensor also for parking lots but I don’t use that. You can watch it on your phone (WiFi connection) or take the card out and download to your computer.

Yes, I check periodically that is sill recording. Being a cheap dash cam the date gets out of sync, so I just reset to the correct date when I check recordings.
