Does anybody have any tips on getting licensed in CA? I am in Santa Cruz, so if there are any classes around here someone can recommend that would be greatly appreciated.

My father passed away recently and has a few firearms. I would love to be able to keep them in the family, as I know that”s what he would want. He was on the east coast so they’d have to transfer states.

Go to any FFL and take the exam. It's 20 (?) common-sensical questions. As far as transferring to here, not a clue how that works, but you may need to modify some things before bringing them here.

In California we have different licenses for firearm possession. At a basic level, a Fire Arm Safety Certificate will allow to you own guns and is the brief test mentioned above. If you want to carry a concealed firearm in public you need to go to an approved training course and apply for a CCW via your sheriff dept. Bay Area Sheriffs are notoriously stingy when it comes to issuing CCW permits.

Getting my CCW in Placer County was a simple process. Between finger printing and application fees I think it was somewhere around $300 plus the cost of the training course which varies widely between instructors.

Thanks for the info! I figured it must be a bit stricter here in CA, especially for a CCW. But maybe not as bad as I originally thought. I will probably start the process after the holidays.

Not clear what you mean by “getting licensed “. Are you talking about licensed to carry concealed? That really depends on what county you live in and it’s up to the sheriff there. In some counties it’s almost impossible to get ccw but in others like where I live it’s easy. I don’t know for sure but I have a feeling the Santa Cruz area is not gun friendly and the sheriff mostly denies requests.
As far as transferring guns into California, talk to an FFL. There may be some problems since you are not the current registered owner. You’ll probably need a copy of your fathers will or trust but an FFL can advise you.

Really I’m not too concerned with CCW, mainly just want to be able to hold onto them legally. So it sounds like my first step is to talk to an FFL to see what I need to do. Regardless, I’d still like to take a CCW class as I think that is good knowledge to have.

Hey - anyone want a S&W Shield 9 (CA compliant)?

Bought it a few years ago for concealed carry but literally had to turn in my CCW license right after I bought it (moved out of the county) and never really used it after that. Has MAYBE 150 rounds through it but that’s being generous - basically a brand new gun.

    Included:

    One 7-round magazine
    One 8-round magazine
    Safariland IWB holster
    Original box

    $400

Damn ! Great price! I just bought one recently. Love how small it is. (That's not what she said). I also added the apex trigger and upgraded sights

Holy shit what’s goooood dude?!! Ain’t seen your avatar in a MINUTEEEE!!

Yeah it’s a sweet gun - love the ergonomics and overall smoothness in recoil for how small it is. Tried to price it right so someone could get a good gun for a good price!

No worries. Just tryin to keep ya from getting a slap on the wrist.

Some people think the rule is lame (I, personally, understand why it's there). But, regardless, it is what it is.
