I did this same thing but all doors plus tweets and one sub. With the Lc7 converter and 4ch amp sound was absolute garbage wasnt worth all the work with speed wire and T harnesses i made. Final piece that fixed my problem was replacing the head unit with a Pioneer DMH-WT7600NEX. That was the ticket, fixed all the garbage sound that was coming out of the factory unit. Factory the sound slope is nasty when volume goes higher, low end completely drops off leaving you with nothing for the subs and amp you put in.

I would do it right from the begining if i were to do it again, lots of headaches and wasted time using that stock unit.

The stock HU is junk. Do yourself a favor and replace it.

went through the whole thing, $1200 Audiocontrol DSP/AMP, speakers, sub...factory H/U is junk. garbage in, garbage out. Swapped to a $500 Chinese android H/U, even that is night and day.
Save the trouble, replace the H/U. any of the better H/U have carplay/android auto and better displays

I just replaced the Tweeters and added an underseat 8" Powered Sub. Used the rear speakers to splice the amp in.

    I'm more than content!

    A growing list of stuff
Nice piece. Glad to see that PAC is still making quality interfaces.

Next you just need to buy new speakers (components in the front, coax for the rear) amplification for the speakers 4-6 channels (maybe a sound processor as well), a sub with enclosure, wiring for said amp and speakers, and sound deadening. Simple job for most DIY guys..... Tee hee hee

What is the difference in sound between the oem head unit and the aftermarket head unit?

Like someone previously said, PAC makes one to interface with your headunit and is completely lug and play. I have a 2021 though and, when I did my setup, they didn’t have one for the 2021. I ended up getting the Rockford Fosgate DSR1, which has a built in DSP. It’s a long story though; it was suppose to be plug and play but ended up not working. Apparently I was the first person to try it with a 2021. They ended up sending a tech to my house who happened live in the area to run some scans. After a few days of them analyzing the results they got a working firmware for me. Has worked fine every since.

Western Auto sold better head units compared to stock Tacoma.

I did a complete stereo overhaul on mine.
Pioneer deck with Android Auto, 2 Skar amps, Skar tweeters in the dash, Pioneer 6.5" midrange speakers in the front doors, Pioneer coaxials in the access cab doors, and a CT sounds 10" sub.
    My stereo sounds amazing.

    LOL!!!!
I went with the Skar amps because they were the only ones that I could find that were small enough to go mount under the jump seats. DSC_0015.jpg DSC_0013.jpg DSC_0012.jpg

As someone previously posted, it really seems that trying to keep the stock HU and expecting great sound is not possible. Alpine Type X components in the front, Hertz in the rear, Alpine amp, LCI 7 LOC, and an underseat Alpine powered amp for a little bass and it's not even close to sounding like I want it to. I've setup numerous systems in the past with success but changed the HU. That Pioneer in the previous post looks sweet. If I could replace the HU and not lose ANY stock functionality I would do it in a heartbeat.
