Ok, first a short outline of the task ahead.

House built in 1960, Attic poorly ventilated, bathroom & kitchen vented into attic, 12" blown fiberglass and some batt insulation.

    Work done so far:
Bathroom & kitchen vented through roof. Ridge Vent installed (8.5 sq feet vent).

    Planned Work:
Replace/Open soffit vent, Replace previous square vents (<3 sq feet). Remove/Replace insulation with 17" blown fiberglass (R49).

    Problem:
Mold discovered as a result of the years of poor ventilation. Servpro has taken samples, result should arrive this week. I have an independent DIY test arriving tomorrow, results in 10 days. Insulation removal quote is pending the results of mold test. Mold remediation path is pending results of mold test.

I know we are on a path with few options and dealing with specialized equipment and personnel. I expect the mold work to be a big hit on the budget.

Has anyone done mold remediation or removal that would share the approximate cost?

So far my costs are stacking up like this...
Install Insulation, baffles and vent chutes $3200 (quoted)
    Old insulation removal $2800 (estimate)
    Mold test $140 (quoted)
Mold test $70 (DIY kit, paid)
    Mold remediation $2000 (estimate)
Ridge Vent + shingles $180 (paid)
    Soffit Vent $700 (estimate)
Repair/removal of old vents $60 (estimate)

Do these costs and estimates seem reasonable?

This is the typical home project.....they always balloon beyond the original scope.:frusty::facepalm:

Welcome to my personal hell/. Is all the mold in the attic, or are you having trouble in the walls as well?

If all the trouble is in the attic have the old stuff sucked out while you have something open, let it air dry for a few weeks and then blow in new. If you have mold in the insulation in your walls you will have to look at both interior wall (vapor) sealing and exterior wall (wind blown rain) sealing.

    It sucks for sure.

Where are you located? My FiL does mold remediation work here in Georgia and they have offices all over the country.

Thanks all......We are on the path without exits and few options.

Basic cause is poor ventilation in the attic. I'm in the process of adding a 3" wide intake vent on the perimeter of the exterior soffit. Ridge vent is installed (8.5 sq ft of exhaust area). The old undersized box roof vents will be removed when the weather cools a bit.

Servpro is doing the mold remediation beginning on the 9th. Estimate is $2900.
Insulation removal is on the 13th. Quote $2200
2 week gap while I undertake ceiling work in the kitchen.
Insulation install (17" blown fiberglass, R49). Quote $3200.

Fortunately, the mold test results came back with common mold. Nothing dangerous, but needs to resolved. All confined to the attic, walls are clear.

Wife isn't happy. The kitchen remodel is on hold for a while......

Had to do a quick search to see if anyones been through what I’m going through. Found some water in our side room seeping through a corner and after some digging found some mold. Curious how your situation went if you don’t mind sharing more info since your last post
