I recently acquired some used predator tube steps off Facebook marketplace. They were in pretty good shape and I got a great deal. They have one nick in the powdercoat that I'll need to fix as well as one weird issue: the powdercoating had a dull haziness to it. I gave my truck a wash tonight and gave the steps a bit of Turtle Wax Hybrid Ceramic Polish and Wax. Seemed to darken them back up to an acceptable hue. Not sure how well you can see in the pics or if anyone has discussed this. Just wanted to help out if anyone else has the issue.

I can tell it looks better.

Mine are starting to do it a little bit and flat side steps, not like yours. Wasn't sure what to put on them because I don't want them slick that some cleaners leave behind.

I didn't notice any sickness with the product I used, since the steps have a texture to them. I also read about Chemical Guys Bare Bones. Might give that a look.

I'm not sure why I'd take the time to paint over powdercoating when it can be remedied through easier means.

1 Cheap can of satin black Paint and a light coat and you will never be able to tell you painted them.

No worries though, continue to apply your remedies weekly

How long do you think rattle can will last that has no UV protectant? How long before the rattle can flakes off the powder coat?

The current option can be done while maintaining the paint. If the OP wants to go longer, then he can use a trim coating on it that will last a minimum of a year.

Exactly. And to paint, I'd have to pull the steps off and sand them to do it right. PITA.
The wax took me 10 minutes using a product I already own, and wax isn't going to lose it's effectiveness in a week.

My detailer cleaned it as good as he could. He applied Chemical Guys Barebones. Came out dark.

I use rattle can bedliner on my old N-Fab steps about once a year. It looks pretty good and gives the steps some nice texture. I just pickup up my new to me tacoma and it was just detailed. Almost fell on my ass the first time I stepped on the shiny slippery rails ... oops.

I have to redo every spring but it holds up well for what I need. I don't disagree with the the polishing or doing a real repaint either. Just sharing what works for me.

My problem is that my steps are not just weathered, but the leading edges have lost the powder coat after taking a beating from sand and rocks. They needed more than just a polishing to fix weathering / UV fading and a rattle can once a year is way cheaper and easier than having them repainted / powder coated.

By reading online, Powder coated surface can be compound and polished. If you got experience with a buffer it may be worth a try.
