If it makes you feel any better OP.
We’ve got a Ford 4.6 with a “repair” sleeve for a spark plug, that is currently sitting on to of the piston in the combustion chamber.

The head has to come off.
I’m of the opinion to remove and replace the engine. Not the cylinder head.

Those who know, know. Those that don’t, you don’t want to. It’s a nightmare.

If its a Ford why not just send it straight to the crusher? Save everyone the trouble? :D

    got it.

it was right at the drain hole. tried not to disturb it as i fed thin wire up from drain hole up to the cv hole. pulled wire out cv hole.

then carefully thread bottom side of wire through threaded hole of puller. twisted wires, pulled up and out.

thanks to all my TW friends. i have to be at work tomorrow and now it looks like ill be able to finish this and make it on time. thank you.

is there an easy way to attach pocs from my phone?

We use a threaded repair sleeve with a shoulder that can’t find its way into the cylinder. Is your repair sleeve an insert that is threaded inside and out?

Yes, it was. Was being the key word there. I was the 3 person to have a “look” at it. And the 1 person previously repaired it with the kit below. The kit worked for about 3 years. But either it, or the spark plug became loose - again.
Upon removing the plug, the insert somehow ended up in the cylinder head.

The engine has 297k on it.

FWIW, if I were to try a repair kit on one in the future. I’d use the Calvan kit. And NOT the type shown below.

I would NOT use this style kit. 5D59DF1F-B4A8-4ED0-864E-6A2961A6F465.jpg

Congrats on getting it out. Too bad you didn't make a video as it probably would have helped somebody else down the road, although I'm guessing this post will help someone else too.

Good thinking on twisting up the wire - great way to pull it out & direct it where you want it to go.

Interesting. I don’t think that I would go anywhere near this style kit:

I think you’re asking for problems with the straight barrel style insert. Every time a spark plug is installed there is the risk of spinning the insert into the cylinder. The installer would need to be very observant.

We use a kit badged by Ford, but it looks very much like the Cal Van kit you posted a link for.
We have had decent-ish results with it. We have installed dozens of these inserts and have had to replace a handful of cylinder heads.

the top three photos show how i 1. fished the wire from bottom to top. 2. threaded the bottom portion through the threaded hole in the puller. 3. twisted the bottom portion of the wire around the wire and slowly pulled it up and out the cv joint hole.

the bottom picture shows how i had to use the bench grinder to bevel the bottom (the non-pulling face of the tool) in order to rotate it in the hole. I read on TW that some trucks require this mod in order for it to fit. IMO, it should come like this. There is no downside in terms of reducing the diameter. If you do this using a bench grinder, be sure to use some sandpaper and smooth it all out as you dont want to damage the bore.

Id like to thank everyone for the help. The job is all done and I will be able to make it out to my work job tomorrow which is 8hrs away.
