The inverted filter units have an anti-drain back valve, not to prevent drain back to the filter but to keep the oil from draining out of the filter. The oil in the filter is what provides the oil pump's start-up oil. This is why many prefill a new oil filter before installing it, it's just good insurance.

If you are having difficulty removing the cartridge using the proper tools...your housing was over tightened. Period.
It doesn't become tighter because it has been through heat cycles.
If you torqued it to spec and it's over tightened at the next service, your torque wrench is out of calibration, or you are using it incorrectly.
But seriously, you don't need to torque the oil filter housing. The housing's O ring has significant resistance and there is a stop flange on the bottom of the housing. When you fell the o ring's resistance suddenly increase...you just hit the stop flange. Stop tightening immediately, not another 1/8 turn, not torque to XX. Just Stop.

13 Oil changes completed on my 3rd Gen. Only the first one sucked.

That last sentence is a GREAT clincher.

I will make the dealership maintenance shop aware of my concerns in doing the oil change correctly.

Just make sure to not overtorque it when you finally do get it off. I have had several toyotas with the canister type filter, 1st oil change is always a bear!

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
That's how I do it now. Marked where it was from factory, noted where it was after I torqued to 18 and now just get it to that point by hand and call it done.

Yeah you did get flamed a bit. That's not cool.
Looks like you got the right tools to get it off. How easy did it come off with that breaker bar?
That's probably what I will need to use.

Part that gets me is I was able to get the filter off with no issues at 5,000 miles and I know I didn't put it on too tight myself.
I let a dealer do the oil change a 10,000 and they over tightened everything. Even to oil fill cap I had to use a big set of slip joint pliers to break loose. IDK they had done that.

It still was tight. I tried using the 3/8 off the breaker bar directly on the oil wrench. it started to bend. I stepped back and realized that the 1 1/2 socket over the wench might work. It did.

Yeah my wrench lets you use a 27mm socket. I was using that with the rachet. Still couldn't get it. I have to go try the breaker bar or take it a shop.
It 14°f here today so I'm not feeling like getting out and laying on the ground. It was 39 of Friday when this all started. That was more tolerable.

Not sure anyone has mentioned this: Make sure you have the tool seated all the way -- I found that it can feel like it is seated, but it's not seated all the way, and it will slip. If you get it seated all the way it should not slip.

I never let the dealer touch mine, but the first 2 were more difficult than the last couple. I had to use a strap wrench on the housing once when taking out the bottom drain plug, but my last change went as it was supposed to.

Yeah I think the seated thing was an issue the first try to break it loose then I doubled my effort to get it on good. Then the socket was slipping off the wrench. If you look at the picture I posted back you can see it was starting to round wrench a little and took some of the black paint off

Photos of said action from dealership:

The Air Dam created a cumbersome task for the technician to properly bolt the front of the skid plate.

These came from the previous skid plate.

I'm glad the TRD Skid plate does not need the use of the threaded holes the previous skid plate seated in.

I stopped by the Mechanic near work today. they took a look at the thing and he said he could change it for me but said the filter cap looked ok. He also said that it would not really be a big deal to run that filter to the next oil change in 5,000 miles since I had new clean oil in there. He would take it back to the dealer for the last free change and let them deal with the problem. I'm probably just going to do that but mention not to over tighten it and not go to the Baltimore area dealer again. Hopefully this isn't kicking the can down the road.

Shouldn't have to do that but did that break the plastic?

Nice I have to find my breaker bar and try again. Just been too cold out to mess with for over a week here even if I wanted to.
