Would you count the X-1 flights off B29s post WW2? Not orbital but rocket powered and the beginning of the X planes which ultimately led to the shuttle.

 

The X-1 was cool but never came close to going to space.

 

I don’t know about wiki but launch vehicle should have a broader scope. Call them air launch mother ships instead. B-52 and 747 have both done it and are still flying even if no particular airframe saw duty the entire time. I think the X-15 was the first air launched rocket to reach space, certainly the first manned one. It just struck me how much longevity the 747 and B-52 airframes have enjoyed. Other planes have been built but nothing seems to completely replace either one. Apparently the idea still has merit.

 

No argument from me on what’s a launch vehicle, I was just getting it out there.

Don’t know much about the 747, but the B-52s longevity is insane. It’s gonna live on longer than most of us
