So we have to pay grid access fees and are only allowed a system that generates no more than 120% of current power, this mght seem ok but its just enough to cover off-peak charging in the winter and not enough to cover EV charging.

Based on our last 3 quotes in 2020, the Solar ROI begins after 12 years.

I love it. EV's and the infrastructure that is needed to make them practical keep me employed.

I work in the mining industry, La Escondida mine in Chile is the worlds largest copper mine. Estimates I've read, say we need to discover eight additional La Escondida mines to produce the copper needed for global infrastructure of the green electric world

Years ago I read of of US military test H1 that had hub electric motors and a diesel genset in the bed. The idea was it could be used as a field generating station and power a field med centre. Ever since then I've been intrigued by what can be done with motors for each wheel.

You'd install that for range but then it'd cover your spare so you can't go too far for fear of not having a spare =)

The spare is towards the back tailgate this battery is under the rear window so no interference.

agree - it's going to be a HUGE undertaking to build up the grid. I mean we're still barely able to keep up with current demands - my only concern is that peoples make decisions on EV pushes, but don't understand the infrastructure to make it viable.

The R1T is a cool truck I think - cool that they push the design boundaries and just neat overall. I'd still take an ICE - I don't see them as practical for multi-day overlanding - city cruising sure, some weekend warrior-ing probably, but that's about it in my mind (which in honestly, probably fills 90% of the needs of those that would buy a truck in the first place). The other place I don't see these as practical is farming/ranching areas.

I've said it in another thread, but am interested and eager to see the development of solid-state batteries - would help a lot.

I'm in a Rural Area but think a Rivian would actually fit my needs just fine, the only issue for me is the price as they are priced higher than the cost of my house.

Where are you living with a house that cheap?!

Price is definitely not ideal but that's where things are going these days. Prices won't become more "reasonable" until they are available at a larger scale.

Bought in 2019 but Rural Areas are not bad for house pricing, did have to replace the shingles after purchase and also replaced the furnace/ac, and hot water tank to higher efficiency units. Still under the cost of a new Rivian with everything though. Hopefully as they become more widespread there will be a dramatic drop in pricing.

no yeah, agree - I think it would be fine in rural areas, but I don't seem them (or just electric trucks in general) being a work truck solution - my thoughts being in farming/ranching. The hit on range when towing is hard, and don't think you can tow on a gooseneck - that's the kind of work I'm thinking of. I'd be interesting whether you would have enough range as a supervisor say in the oil field or something like that as well. Just interested to see how these would work as work trucks. As well - I don't think the Rivian would be a work truck, but thinking more the F150 lightning or even the silverado/ram offerings - I think with solid state it could work, but yeah - just could see some hard points if you hit range limitations.

A cheap (dumpy) house in my area is double the price of that Rivian.

X10 here! I just saw one on the road the other day. Except for the robot front end they look cool. These thing are Quick. Smokes a TRX! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkhPNFHkBes

It can work. I like that even though the bed is only 4.5 feet long you can put 4x8 sheets laying flat in it with the neat tailgate. If I ever get an EV (when I get one I should say) this might be it.

Yes! I've been following this series. It's probably the first electric vehicle I've been truly excited about. And I agree about the front end, but I guess everyone has to have their thing.

I'm reviving this thread because I just encountered this:

He said it pulls like a boss and he gets 70 miles of range.

Exceeded his load rating and gets 70 miles of range. Ouch.

Maybe. 1500lb+ payload and 11k pound tow rating, looks like it could still be within the limits.

It seemed like he uses it for this often. I'm pretty rural and the skidsteer and trailer weren't rentals, so I assume he at least knows the risks.
