Saving weight vs looks

    Would you rather run a smaller tire, albeit slightly larger than stock, and drop 5lbs a corner?
    Or run a larger tire, but gain 9lbs a corner

    I was dead set on 285/75/16s until I did this math and the weight saving and money savings is looking quite attractive.

    What does TW think?

    I vote for option 1 - Cooper Adventurer. I like the look of the tire (not too aggressive, has a good street tread for a quieter ride, and it's lighter). Plus I'm a fan of white lettering.

    You have to look at the truck a lot, you should like the way it looks after spending the money on it! 9lbs isn’t a big gain, you won’t notice much of a change. Go for it!

    Im currently going though this process as well. What I did was pick 3 wheel and 3 tire finalist that I liked in my desired size, Then I chose the lightest of the 3.

    A few OE parts from fancy trucks
    9lbs per corner of unsprung weight is a lot. In the auto-x world it could easily be the difference between podium and also ran.

    While I'm sure the impact on a truck isn't quite the same, there is still something to be said for nimble.

    If your usage is 90+% pavement, I'd wager lighter is better. And if you could do back to back same condition testing, you'd notice it. Easily.

    What performance characteristics do you need vs want. If you want superior durability you may need more weight. If you want bad ass tread you may need to adjust your driving experience. I found my decision on this spectrum to favor some characteristics over others. In the end, the tires will wear out so even a miscalculation will be correctable next time.

    My experience is that tire weight really doesn’t make that big a difference. I had 53 lb E load tires in 265 70 17. Once they wore down I bought the same tire in C load 45lbs. I only gained 1 mpg. I went from 16.5 mpg comb to around 17 or 18 mpg comb.
    If you don’t need lots of protection then go Sl or C load for sure.
    285s look really good on our trucks. Way better than 265s.

    They look really good, I went with a C load 285.
    There are some 34 or 33 inch x 10.5 tires out there as well if you want additional clearance.

    this is def an important factor, no off road get the lightest tires you want. If you like exploring and getting far into the wilderness light means less rubber that is more likely to puncture.

    On YouTube search ‘cooper tire puncture test’. Don’t think they talk about sidewall strength just tread
