2nd gen Joying Head Unit Thread

Most just don't plug in the wired mic (myself included). I have not seen a setting for swapping between the two.

 

I'll have to do some tests between wired and not wired. I asked a recent caller if they could hear me and they said it was fine, just maybe the volume was a little lower. I have my mic sitting on top of the rear view mirror pointed at my face. Where is the internal mic located? guessing somewhere on tablet face?

 

I have mine in a similar place, but clipped to the headliner, pointed at me. I'm assuming the two holes in the upper left corner of my display is the mic. I have my wired mic running in some loom with the external gps antenna (mounted in the upper left of my windshield until my factory antenna adapter arrives). Wonder if the GPS wire is causing any interference on the mic wire since they're so close together.

 

What's the link for the factory gps connector?? I need that.

Thanks! I'll wait until after you can confirm if it works. i saw there was a connector for the tesla style hu in another thread, but wasn't sure if it'd work for the Joying.

 

I was messing around with the fader today and noticed that if i put the fader all the way to the rear, there is no sound. If I do it halfway to the rear, then there is sound. Sound almost every setting but with fader all the way to the rear, then it completely cuts off sound

 

I believe someone in this thread said that when they remove the foam wind cover from the external mic, it improved the sound quality.

 

Problem solved. Matte black vinyl FTW. Tested today. Almost looks factory with other matte parts in the interior

I actually tried this last night and caller on the other end said it was a tad clearer, but still too quiet and with a lot of "road noise" between talking.

 

On that setting, only the front speakers work. I tried just about every setting with Toyota in the name. They all either just have the front speakers working or all the speakers work, but there is no volume or fader control.

 

This is the info I needed to hear. I'm definitely looking to add a front facing camera.



What's the RMS output on this headunit? 50w?

Is there a difference when selecting the years on the website?

I am considering a new joying unit for my 2nd gen. My main concerns are:

1. Previous units i have had, the bluetooth hands free calling has been terrible. It seems from this thread that the joying units are pretty good, and dont require the external mic to work well. Is that correct?
2. I dont have the steering wheel controls module anymore, the joying comes with all that included?
3. How clean does the 10.5 inch unit look? The 11.6 looks too big like it covers some of the vents but is the 10.5 not so bad? I would like the bigger screen but not if it looks a bit tacky. Otherwise I will go with the 9 inch.
4. Are there any difference in functionality between the dif sizes of joyings?

 

Just installed the 9” in my 2012 with the non-JBL stereo in the pic.

As an FYI for anyone with the same stereo, two of the five plugs from the original head unit don’t connect to the Joying harness (small blue plug is the aux usb).

Also the USB retention cable mentioned throughout this thread doesn’t work (specifically in a 2012 with this radio). It is literally the only year Tacoma that uses this one ->
Metra AX-TOYUSB-2 2010-Up Toyota USB Adaptor.
And the usb Adaptor doesn’t attach to the blue plug that hooks into the stock headunit but instead plugs into another plug that’s under/behind the glovebox as shown in THIS thread (post #13)

 

1. I've had no complaints and I use the built-in mic.
2. It supports steering wheel controls out of the box, but you will have to program them - it is pretty easy, though.
3. I've only seen pictures of the 10" models but they seem OK.
4. The only thing different between the models is the screen size. The metal box is the same. That said, one of the 10" models has a newer user interface (from the website, it appears to support four different configs for the new interface), but functionally, they are all identical except that the 8" model has knobs and some touch panel controls.

 

Anyone know how to do split-screen?

Got my GPS adapter today and confirmed it works! Also seemed to be picking up both extra GPS and GLONASS satellites compared to the Joying. Tested them a few minutes apart, but I have no idea how often/much they fluctuate. Now I can remove the Joying module from my windshield

Wanted to follow up on the camera issue. I'm mostly done with the upgrade and have been out on a few trips. The cameras are working quite nicely. I wish they were clearer, but they seem to provide just enough detail to help me place the tires. Here is the little knob circuit I made, before I soldered on all the connectors:



I didn't get any photos showing the completed PCB, or of the cameras being used in actual demanding situations, such as "how many more inches to the cliff edge?" But they were indeed useful in such situations, and I at least remembered to stop at one point and snap a photo or two:



This camera is in the passenger mirror, looking out over the tire. It's hard to see in the photo, so I added a red arrow to the camera selector knob. There's a little red LED next to it that turns on when the cameras are on.



This is the "hey what's under my truck?" cam, mounted on the rear axle looking forward. I need to move it a few inches to the side to better see past the muffler. This one gets killed once a year or so due to driving fast on gravel roads:

But the cameras are only like $20, and sometimes they are pretty damn useful. A spotter would be better, but I am typically out there alone.

Anyway the camera circuit is stupid simple. Just a two-pole rotary switch. One pole distributes power to the cameras, the other selects the video signal. There are diodes for combining the power to provide the "trigger" or "back" signal to the head unit. Here's a little schematic I drew in Paint:



Wish I had taken a photo of the completed PCB. There were a lot of connectors to cram back into the dash there, but I got it to fit. Currently have 4 functional cameras, the fifth is planned to go in a rear bumper if I ever manage to install that.
