General automotive question, because I've never experienced this.

Just picked up a little Mazda 3 with 5 miles on the clock. Exhaust had a burnt oil smell on the test, I assumed it was normal. Dealer said it was typical of a lot of Mazdas, some parts have residual machine oil on them.

I've never experienced this on a new car before, but the explanation makes sense, so we completed the sale.

Today I took the car through a little bit of break-in (casual driving, running errands, and only the most reasonable and respectful hooning. Dang that little car will fly. :cookiemonster:)

90 miles later, still eye watering stinky. I popped the hood, there's a bit of smoke coming off the turbo housing. I don't see any leaks, and smoke is rising from all over, not seams or threads as far as I can tell.

I'm probably going to give it another hundred miles to see if it lessens before raising it with service, but I'm second guessing myself. Anyone else ever get the burn stank on break-in?

Both of the street MC’s I’ve bought new and my Taco did this for the first 100-200 miles. Seems to be normal. Actually made me a little sad when I didn’t smell it anymore LOL

Enjoy that new Mazda! I’ve had a couple of Mazda 3’s as rentals over the years and have always enjoyed them!

Paint oil gaskets and sealant all burning off. Could last a couple hundred miles.
