I’m adding a wheelers 1.5 aal and ordered bilstein 5100 part number
24-186728 To go along with it. Wheelers website is pretty vague about what size lift these are designed for. Eventually I’m going to get Seaver expedition stage 3 leaf packs and didn’t want to have to purchase another set of shock when that time comes. The real question is, what height lift are these shocks rated for? Will they work with the aal and eveutally rhe deaver packs?

Guess I should cancel that and just get the ones with remote resoviors . I believe I read they’re good for 1-3 inch

You could go with the extended length 5100s (b110). They're good for up to 3"-4"

We always recommend shocks be selected based on how much travel that your rear leaf situation is providing. However, looking at what your plans are I would recommend going with the Bilstein 5125 as they provide additional length over the 5100, and won't scream at you with the AAL.
Bilstein PN is 33-230337, and we have them too if you would like to use Hotshot Offroad here instead of Wheelers. If you've had good luck with them in the past no sweat.

If @tonered isn't terribly busy he may be able to provide some of the measurements he took on his 3rd gen.

1.0in lift on a 2nd Gen. There are pics around here somewhere of a 5100 next to a stock 3rd Gen Hitachi. They are the same overall extended length.

    Yessir!

I've been meaning to recheck my numbers, but this was after I got everything installed, which was 4k on the Icon leafs:
    LF: 22 1/8in RF: 21 7/8in
    LR: 23 5/8in RR: 23 1/4in

Basically 1.5in over stock with a fuzz of anti-Taco Lean.

Here's the stocker with new Icon RXTs at Option 1:

I spoke with someone at wheelers just now and was going to change the order to 5125 but the guy said since they were longer I’d have to extended my bump stops to accommodate it so the shock wouldn’t bottom out. Is that right ?

Not that I have found. Since, I have flexed it out many times and saw witness marks on the frame from the bumps. The body length of the 5125s are about the same as stock. Hard to tell 100% because the shaft is on the bottom of the 5125s versus top for the stockers.

Also if you go 5125, be sure to cut down the sleeves to fit the lower mounts. They come separate from the shock, so it is easy to check the fit.

@memario1214 . Do you happen to know the compressed length of the stockers? I forgot to measure before tossing them.

I've got Deaver U402 Stage 3 Expedition springs and running the 5160s with the reservoirs. Been happy with the combination. Running stock bump stops. put on lots of miles loaded to the hilt, and completely empty, too.

    Correct-ish.

The compressed length of a 5100 is 14" whereas the compressed length of a 5125 is 15". Like the rep at Wheelers mentioned you would now have a new ceiling in how much you can bring the axle up if you go to the 5125. If you plan on beating on the truck right now then you should probably get some new bumps, but understand that your ride is going to suffer as you will bottom out sooner. That said, you'll protect the shocks should you stuff the suspension.

I was operating under the assumption that you 100% are going to get the Deaver Stage 3. That leaf pack is considerably thicker than an OEM pack which is going to close that gap that you would be right now filling with a new bump stop.

thank you for the response. I’ll likely wind up getting the leaf pack in another year or so. Just hoping the aal and new shocks will get rid of the sag for now and with my fiberglass shell, decked storage , and 300 pounds of tools while towing a 6x12 enclosed.

    5100s

    – Collapsed Length (IN): 14.02

    – Extended Length (IN): 22.94

    5125s

    – Collapsed Length (IN): 15.01

    – Extended Length (IN): 24.38

    5160s

    – Collapsed Length (IN): 14.22

    – Extended Length (IN): 24.06

The 5160s are only 0.2 inches more collapsed length, vs the 5125s with 0.99 inch added. And 0.47 inches more travel on the 5160s

If you're going to go a year+ with the current new setup then stick with 5100s or 5160s. Sorry to put the cart before the horse here. If these were $500ea shocks we were talking about we might have a different discussion and I'd be forcing you to take some measurements, but at $100 a pop that would make for a long year and tired back with shortened up-travel. The 5100 is designed for 0-1" of lift. When you get the different leaf pack though it will be longer than an OEM pack so you're definitely going to need a longer shock in the rear at that point.
I've got them at 24.38 as well :notsure:

I will NOT go and measure one either :p

I think I got my original numbers from Summit. Sadly, there is nothing on the Bilstein site other than 0in to 4in lift.

Bilstein 5125s look like they can come in several different lengths/travels. The one listed above is the normal Tacoma suggested model. Here are some more non-model specific it seems. or for modified vehicles.

Interesting. I'd go and measure mine, but after beating the sleeve into place, it would be an effort that I'm not up for.

And, the Amazon link below sez 24.38in. Hahaha!
