Correct. You just need the element.

I’ve been using the wix filters forever.

Just FYI: but most Wal-Marts are now carrying the OEM filter kit for the 3rd Gen Taco. Costs around 7 bucks, and you can walk in and grab one if you don't have time to wait for delivery.

OEM Toyota filters aren't better than WIX, but there's certainly nothing wrong with them. Sounds like you got an earful from the "Toyota engineers know best" crowd...don't ever listen to them.

Yep. I confirmed our local Walmart are carrying them too. I was shocked.

1st gen - it's got a built engine, a turbo, and waaaaaaay too much to list. 3rd gen - basic-bitch lift, S/C, Pro Wheels
I'm not one of those "you gotta use OEM parts because they're the only thing worth buying" kinda guys, but if the warranty on the truck is worth anything and they use Toyota filters from the factory and during the free oil service period, then seems like the OEM filters certainly won't do any harm, and the fact that they aren't expensive by any means...why not?

I agree, and (as I said) there's absolutely nothing wrong with them. And I would never tell anyone not to use them. But for me, for what is arguably the most import consumable maintenance part, there is no reason not to buy the best part available when it only costs $10.

Just out of curiosity and sake of knowledge is there a direct comparison of the two showing how the wix exceeds the OEM's abilities in filtration?

It's more Googling than I feel like doing to find exact ratings at the moment. But if memory serves me, WIX is in the neighborhood of 90-95% efficient at 20 microns where Toyota is under 70%. Toyota filters sacrifice filtration for greater flow. Not a horrible design, but not exactly ideal for people properly maintain their vehicles either.
