With the razor 4K right? Because all the other vortex range finders besides the fury suck dick..
I can go out and prove right now the ranger series won’t make it to 800y in a desert…

exception is the fury, but not sure if he’s looking for a bino.

It’s a common rule of thumb. There’s more to it. Like in the OP’s case, he’s shooting in the desert where high amounts of radiation will wash out the laser, complied with whatever dust that may or may not be in the air. It will make it harder to get a range. So that would be a subtraction from that rule of thumb. Compiled with a battery that is drained or cooking in the sun, or frozen.

Reflectivity was mentioned, but steel targets are NOT that reflective, unless you have some reflective coating on them. If you try to range some glass or like a car, you’ll be able to use more of the lasers advertised range, but it’s impractical because humans, animals, trees, and small steel targets are not that reflective.

Beam divergence and software output are highly varying as well, but makes a difference in performance. Being steady (tripod mounted) helps at the longer ranges as well as knowing where the laser is impacting in regards to the reticle as most of the civilian based systems are rarely aligned perfectly. Etc

Long story short, buy once on the lasers. Best not to cheap out.

Yes, most major manufactures rate it as max yardage on a reflective target. A little trick one of the Vortex reps gave me during a class we did with them was keeping refelective tape or paper in your range bag and using it either on your target stands or put it on your shooting bench and range back to where you're shooting from when out setting your targets. Helps get the most accuracy/range out of your range finder.

Also yes, for consistently shooting out to 800 or more the only good options from Vortex are the Razor and Fury.

I will admit, I absolutely know jack about range finders. But at least I can say I know jack plus the knowledge I've gained today. It's good to know that when Skynet pops off and were fighting skinless Terminators, that our range finders will be at optimum working capacity haha.

Thanks for the knowledge! I'm pretty sure I know just use TW for a gun forum lol.

I buy the complete kit, including the trigger bar, firing pin safety and connector off ebay most of the time. I search based on the apex part number.

Its a rule of thumb because (especially on cheaper range finders) the max range is under ideal conditions with a reflective target. With a quality LRF you can get about 70-80% of whatever they advertise on a normal target such as a deer, rock or tree.

The advertised range is for distance to target one way under ideal conditions. Not round trip distance the laser has to travel, mine is rated for 2000yds and that is to the target not 1k target and back.

Just paint the steel targets white and with a good range finder and steady hands or a tripod it will work very well, but I will have to remember the reflective tape idea.

for a good all around unit I went with sig kilo since it plugs into my kestrel weather station/ballistic computer.

People who have no idea about rangefinders that who has a friend that doesn’t want to explain shit to them, tell people to divide by 2 as a rule of thumb. Rule of thumbs are not accurate ways of doing anything.

So what he was saying might not be correct per say, the advise is still true, as a rule of thumb.

There is no such thing as ideal conditions, and you’d be hard pressed to find a sig 2400 ab that will make it to 2400y/m in ANY condition.
Ask me how I know. I think everyone can agree on that. It’s about a 1600-1700ish rangefinder at best unless your target is huge and your putting reflective coating on it.

The problem here is if you give a detailed response with solid scientific information, it goes over everyone’s head. If you go with super layman’s terms, people want to point out the technicals. You point out the cost of a “quality product” as you say, like a terrapin or a system like a kestrel elite and say a Leica 2800.com and all of a sudden dudes are “not that serious” about it.

You paint a target white in the desert, especially a .5 moa at way beyond 800y it’ll dun take a second to find it. I use a fluorescent orange on my plates. I tried a regular orange as attached and it’s not much better lol

I shoot long range exclusively in the desert and find the white easy enough to see and see impact, tried neon yellow once and it that blended in more than I thought. Neon blue and orange was the easiest to pick up but harder to see impacts. The steel i hang up is about twice the size of what you have, i need bigger targets with my skill.

Alot of people try using a golf range finder or the low end gun offerings but you definately get what you pay for in range finders.

My point was that the range finder advertising is meant to be to target, they do not put that number down as to target and back. Just figure 70-80% under real world conditions.

    Just my experience

The LRF's I've used will have a way to lookup your PIR "cone of light" essentially and that is the issue with accuracy.

Example one I was using had a 1m wide beam at 500m

    Another had a .5m at 800.

Don't be afraid to dig into it. If you're still riding the struggle bus some LRF can take a 3 measurement and average it out. As well as if you're not certain about if your hitting where you want etc snap the ground in front of your target or a larger target similarly in depth to see if it makes sense.

Ran into a LRF on my 300 win mag at work that was off by 100m at 400m. So it was useless.

    No bright orange

if you’re not going to buy a legitimate range finder then I reckon you do what you got to do.

And I’m just saying, I didn’t feel the need to correct him.

With MY skill, white doesn’t cut it, it looks like the million white rocks in the background. Especially when the target is 1/2 moa at a mile. Which rounding is about a 10x10. 2 miles 18.

With MY skill the target is small. PRS the targets are small. Sniper, the head is small. Someone goes and buys some mediocre rangefinder, and then finds out their shit doesn’t work when the sun is at full blast in the Mojave desert or in raton New Mexico, and complain that their stop sign zip tied to their target isn’t working, it doesn’t effect me.

Yeah if I don't hit the plate somewhere it's hard for me to judge how I missed. That cloud of dirt kicked up behind is not enough for me to correct my shot.

I might as well be making bang noises at that point.

Oh I know, it sucks. I’m a huge proponent (for my self anyways) of doing close range work down to perfection.

I’ve been doing dope, and wind, and kestrels (Trimbles before that) for so long, I don’t have as much issue with that at around 100-1200ish yards.

On the long long stuff, I can usually (depending on the sun) spot my own vapor trail or hint of trace, but I’ve been doing this stuff for over 20 years. Eventually, I think your eye just knows to check out max ord through the scope, especially if you don’t max out magnification.
