I can't speak to the frame mounting points, but have you tried local buy/sell/trade pages on here? You might ask if anyone has a 2nd gen hitch laying around. I had one sitting at my house for 2 years before just recently taking it to the dump. I replaced my rear bumper with high clearance so had to remove the hitch. I regularly see people with them for sale or free over here in the Pacific Northwest, and it never hurts to ask in those groups if anyone has one or knows anyone with one.

I've already got a hitch on my 2nd gen, just posted this as it's a good price if any of the 3rd gen owners are in the market for a hitch. Just my own curiosity as far as if it would fit a 2nd gen and how much the frames changed on the 3rd gen. I was under the impression the frames were very similar if not the same, though I've never seen them side by side.
