Yeah, that was the go to for everyone in uniform. I found out that permethrin is incredible at killing termites along your house border too, but it will kill some animals. Dogs can process the chemical, but cats can't. So just be careful if you have cats. Side note, as the OP was saying....I sprayed some bens on my legs for an outdoor concert and on my way home I noticed I had a black smudge on the outside of my left knee....yup, my door panel! I tossed that crap immediately and use some eucalyptus stuff that feels good and seems to work.

Key is correct application. It is so powerful you don’t need much. I never put it on my clothes since usually backpacking I am wearing nylon and it would eat it. Eats fly line too. But for max effectiveness min weight it is the best.

Backpackers reporting skin issues I would think would prove or disprove it. Day after day use every year.

They use both bug spray and sunscreen and both get used on the same exposed areas. PABA has been around a long time, so has deodorant. Not everyone gets cancer from exposure to a product and skin cancer doesn’t always end up as the main side effect of topical products. Once something gets through your skin it can end up anywhere. Finding out what caused and then proving it sufficiently is very difficult.

Yeah. The question of sunscreen or deet first has yet to be answered.

I live in an area without any mosquitoes…. It’s not too cold for them though. Anyhow. Some things such as eucalyptus, rosemary and/or lemon balm may be great for pushing away mosquitoes, but bees really like them. So theres that.

Not to mention just the increased uv exposure at altitude. I did a lot of climbing and backpacking though certainly less than many and should probably be in a study of some kind but which one?

There is (was?) some combo sunscreen/insect repellent on the market. If I'm somewhere where I need both, it's usually backpacking/hiking and it's those darn biting flies. They don't seem to care much about any repellent that I've tried.

    Hey, it does still exist...

Fun fact: aerosol sunscreen removes permanent marker from hard surfaces.

Not an issue in Washington (I'm not getting in the ocean, it's cold!) We do use reef safe sunscreen/sun shirts when on vacation in warm places though.

I use Ben's wipes, otherwise I try and rely on clothing and netting to repel bugs. Been in seriously thick clouds and have managed fine. I've been carrying around the same sealed container of 98% Deet for about 10 years...
