Sad to hear about his passing. Awesome to see how many people interacted with his wife to give their condolences on her thread/post that she made.

She started it and good for her. But I think a friend of his took it over for her I think about the 3rd page. Probably to give her some relief. I'm glad she started it though.

Alrighty GA natives, need some vacation insight. Never seen the Atlantic coast and looking at places around Tybee Island. Anyone been there, or have some must do type things around there? How do Atlantic beaches compare to Gulf Coast? If anyone says the sand is like river rock or crushed shells, I'm out lol.

Can't recommend Cumberland Island and St. Marys enough. You can't bring your truck on the island but that's what makes it great. Tybee is cool and there is a lot of good food but the beaches aren't great compared to the Gulf. We enjoy Savannah more than Tybee.

As long as the beach is fairly clean, water swimmable, and good food, thats all I need. All the touristy stuff is for the rest of the family; I could care less lol. Oh, and need to find somewhere with Pina Coladas on the beach to cross off a bucket item with the wife.

The beaches are sand but not the bright white sand that gulf coast beaches have. Tybee itself has strong Panama City Beach vibes IMO but like PCB there are some nicer places around.

Tybee is pretty busy. Not enough parking, which is pricey and heavily policed. If you want to get away from MOST people, go farther South to Jekyll. Like the gulf, the current beaches are man-made/maintained, so, few shells or rocks. Sand dollars are common, though. If you want to get away from ALL people, go to Cumberland and camp (only accessible by plane, ferry, or boat).

I'm good with that; we enjoy PCB, now that its calmed down. Although, being a kid and seeing the main strip lined with cars and girls and tossing mardi gras beads, that was an experience haha.

I lived at PCB as a kid and it was certainly an experience. Grew up within a few hours and spent high school spring breaks there as well. Fun times.

Good to know! As long as I can get into most restaurants within a reasonable amount of time, I'm good. Big crowds at the tourist type things are perfect; easy excuse to not go lol.

my last trip to the beach was actually a savannah trip. We rented a historic townhouse in Savannah did some of the historic and touristy things in the city and then drove out to Tybee island. it was a good mix of activities.

Oh man, so on Jekyll, there's a little touristy area by the new convention center. The food is meh and the portions are tiny. I had a surf & turf plate that equated to a Huddle House steak with three sad, cold shrimp. For good seafood, Zachry's River House (it's a hidden gem) is the place to go for fresh, flavorful, big portions. You can also cross the bridge and get fresh-off-the-boat seafood by the cooler-full. Having eaten at all the restaurants at Jekyll, we tend to cook most meals ourselves, hit Zachry's for dinner one night, and lunch at the Wharf.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
I spearheaded a beach trip to a place I used to hang out a lot as a child. Hard to beat.

Funny enough, I've read through that thread before! I'd love to make a trip out there, but this particular trip will be with other friends/fam, so that'd have to be for another time!

My family was with me on that trip. I rented the condo with a boardwalk that took me directly to my truck lol

What I'm really getting at, is I'd like to make that trip with a group of people (maybe TW again one day) that would enjoy it as much as I would lol.

So it's not in GA but just a little north in Beaufort SC. there is a little island called Hunting Island. It's one of those really pretty driftwood beaches. You can truck camp there too. I also agree Cumberland Island is one of the best places GA has to offer. Tybee gets really crowded but you can kayak over to Little Tybee Island and have the beach to yourself. I've camped there a few times too. As Far as good food St Simmons has quite a few really good spots. My favorite being Mullet Bay. But with the sand being darker on the Atlantic coast than the Gulf none of those places have water as pretty as the gulf. But it's a give and take. I really enjoy when the Atlantic has good waves. I've rarely seen good waves in the gulf.

I had been wondering about access to little tybee island. Do you know if theres a place to rent kayaks? This group of friends/fam would probably throw up at the thought of camping on a beach, but I think they'd have a really fun time kayaking across to Little Tybee. Also, speaking of waves, any chance to book some surfing lessons? I've always wanted to give it a try, and sounds like something else the rest of the group would have a blast doing.

I'm sure there is rentals. I've never looked into it though. As far as surfing it's rare to see waves that good unfortunately. Mostly it's just fun to play in them. The only times I've seen good surfable waves is after the end of summer and closer to storm season.
