There have been many requests over the last few years by members here asking what is possible from tuning a 2nd Gen Tacoma. We've put that question off for far too long. Last week, OTT decided to put a bone stock 2014 Auto truck on the dyno and find out once and for all, what can the average user get from a full tune. We now have that answer and are happy to share with you what we've found.

Details: 2014 DCSB Tacoma, 4.0L, Auto, 76K, Bone Stock

    2G_Stock-vs-OTT.jpg

    2G_Stock_87_91.jpg
*The green line represents what can be expected on 86/87 octane fuel by manually setting the KCLV to a value representative of running said fuel.

And for giggles and to stir conversation, here's what happens when you remove the stock airfilter (leaving stock secondary in place):

    2G Tune vs Tune+No Airfilter.jpg

If you'd like more information about OTT or getting your Tacoma tuned you can read more about us and what we offer here:

How about a 2nd Gen vs a 3rd Gen Both Stock and Tuned?

    Here you go!

Nice. Glad to have some data. Interesting graphs for 2nd and 3rd gens. Tbh, it does match my expectation that the 3.5 is just a bit down to the 4.0 at the low/mid end, but has better breathing and power at higher rpms.

Question/verification though. The last 2nd gen graph shows a green line for regular gas results. Does this mean that all the other 2nd and 3rd gen pulls were done with premium gas and a premium gas tune?

Correct - the other pulls were performed on premium w/ premium specific tunes.

The Green line was performed with a 86/87 octane tune run on premium (however, with the KCLV manually set to ensure the tune did not run in a more advanced state due to the octane learning capability the ECU has).

I only have one criticism.....what do the torque graphs look like? Thirsty for all the datas. :D

Getting that 3rd gen engine tuned, really opens up the hp improvement, even as the rpms climb.

It would do really well with boost.

These runs were done on different drums of the dyno. I can't overlay HP/Torque from both trucks as there would be 4 axes, and WinPep only supports two axes.

*It should be noted the 3rd Gen's tuned torque curve is a bit uncharacteristic. We had some torque related throttle closures (up to 6% closure) in the 4K RPM range. We're working on re-testing and getting revised numbers.*

    But here's the torque overlays:

    Indeed!

The 3rd Gen intake manifold has a horrible dip as the ACIS flapper activates. Something interesting happens within that plenum when that valve actuates for sure. The torque dip is unavoidable unfortunately. You did see my note about torque limiting throttle closures ~4K RPM right?

    That I did.

My 4x4, on the APR x-1 had a similar issue. Couldn't tune it out, if I remember correctly.

Ah man, I’m excited for this. Planning to get the tune in a couple months. But I plan to run only 87. Hopefully it feels awesome.

question. So I do see 2 different lines. One for 91, and the green line for 87. When I get my tune, do I have to tell them what I am planning to run or will the tune adjust for what fuel is in the truck?

    Paul,

Please let your tuner know what fuel you primarily run. If your truck occasionally sees premium, I'd still recommend you go with the standard 87 octane tune. It'll learn up and approach the full performance potential of the premium only tune.

I am certain you'll be pleased. It breaths some new life into these trucks. Be sure to let us know what you think when you give it a go.

    Best,

Thank you! We're quite proud of our 2nd Gen results and thankful Toyota left us some room to grow.

Thanks for trusting OTT with your tuning needs. :D

Following this thread I'm very encouraged by the option to boost performance over stock just by re-tuning. No need to change headers/exhaust, add SC, etc.

Are there any known (or potential) long-term impacts on engine life / durability? (Assuming that driving patterns remain approximately the same, i.e. in my case 95% of miles on the highway at 60-65mph, occasional dirt-road / forest road jaunts taking revs into the more spirited 4000+ rpm range.)

We've obviously not performed any lab grade tests to validate the long term effects of the tune due to the immense cost associated with that kind of testing. However, I can confidently say we've had no issues in ~3+ years and probably over 400 2nd Gen trucks tuned to date ranging from bone stock to fully built custom turbocharged/supercharged setups.

Our tune uses all OE Toyota safety systems and retains limiters and thresholds that are often defeated/turned off for ease of tuning. We've dug into the Toyota Patents to understand the strategy used by Toyota and developed our tuning to work with that strategy rather than find a way to force it into doing what we want. This method retains all of the adaptive strategies used by Toyota to give the ECU a high degree of freedom and flexibility in adapting to different fuel quality/octane ratings as well as other internal and external variables.

Using this method, I can confidently say you will not exhibit any additional wear to the engine or transmission as a result of using our tune.
