I have a DeWalt dcf894 that's done everything I need it to. Will break them free and slow down automatically once there's no need for torque

Makita fanboy here. As others have stated, I use a star lug nut wrench to break free the lugs, then a light weight 3/8 impact wrench to remove and install the lugs. It produces about 50 ft lbs, but that is enough once you break the lugs free.

Do you do that on purpose or because you don’t own a 1/2 inch drive?

The Milwaukee M12 stubby impact (250 ft-lb) loosens CV axle nuts and steering stop bolts with ease. However it becomes useless on lugnuts if I have an extension on the socket. It also couldn't loosen the leaf shackle bolt or the Subaru's harmonic balancer. That's why I bought an M18 mid-torque (560 ft-lb).

On purpose and I do have a 1/2 inch impact drive. The 3/8 drive is much lighter and use it around the car predominately as a result. I'll use a breaker bar to break free the nuts/bolts.

Doesn’t that kind of defeat the purpose of the impact in the first place?

@$yoda$ Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. I do use it; just not as much as others. I've used it to remove the CV axle nut on my truck and wife's Lexus; also leaf spring bracket nuts, and same on a friend's Tacoma. I, maybe, use it 3-4 times a year one year, none the next. I should mention I have the XWT08Z, a monster of a half inch - 740 lbs of fastening torque and 1180 lbs of busting torque, about 8-9 lbs with a battery. I should have got the mid level half inch, like the XWT15Z.

So I picked up a Ryobi P262 1/2 impact wrench. It has good reviews, it suits my needs and I have other Ryobi tools and I can use the batteries.

Yeah I have one of the big ones to. I have been happy I had it a couple times. Axle nuts and a few harmonic balancer bolts for timing belt replacements but I think the smaller stubby would have been a lot more useful overall.
