Is there a recommended octane booster? I would really like to hear you guy's thoughts on what is available, what you have used and your reasoning for choosing that one.

I have seen products from Boostane and VP Racing come recommended on TW. Are there others that might be a better choice?

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01C4IH6Z...colid=1P5D39KHH5V3M&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it&th=1

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07P13524K/?coliid=ISJUIEHEFEL6T&colid=1P5D39KHH5V3M&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

I live where 92 octane is readily available, but I also go to some remote places where 91 or higher isn't. What have you guys done when all you could get was 87 (or 85, lol) or accidentally put in the wrong one?

I have the can but never used the boostane. One word though is that shit is potent. You'll want to back it or something to contain the smell.

Boostane does not smell any different that other octane boosters. Boostane does work really well, and you can feel the truck advance the timing to get more power. It does leave a yellow deposit on your O2 sensors, not sure if the deposits are harmful. I used to run Boostane all the time when I lived in Texas the weather would get warm.

Yeah. It's rough. Maybe mine had a slight leak, but I've not noticed.

It looks like Boostane comes in two different strengths, Professional or Premium? Which one are you using?

Premium. I believe the professional is not for on road use.

I'm not sure I fully understand what that all means. Not that it matters, at least for how I think I might use it, it would be mostly in off road use.

If one is to believe what Boostane says on their website, this is not true. Also not true is that there is an issue with how long it keeps. The website does specify that the "pro" version is not street legal where the premium version is.

Well, I had hoped that more people would have chimed in but this has helped to clarify things for me.

I think I am going to pick up some of the pro version of this stuff.

I run boostane professional. I buy the 4 pack of 32oz cans for $112.00 . 2 ounces in a tank of 89 or 91 octane is enough to make the truck not ping and you can feel the difference in power. not a crazy difference but for instance a certain long hill climb in my area (the "4lanes" going to Shaverlake east of Fresno Ca.) id be going up just over 70 in 4th gear with just 91, with boostane I can easily pull them at 80 and without boostane I cant use 5th gear, but with it it cruises up in 5th

I haven't felt the need for them if your tune is in the ball park. I even road tripped from Denver to Montana all on 87 with no issues. I even ran flat out up some passes to see if it would ping but nothing at 10 psi and 11.5ish AFR.

I have used Torco while racing in Baja in a bronco that runs on pump gas. It worked as advertised, read the fine print as some of those raise the octane 0.1 points with doesn't help you at all besides lightening your wallet.

Are you running it in ever tankful? Acording to their chart, 2 oz of pro adds about 1.5-2 octane. Does that seem about right to you?

Wow, that is impressive. That's wiith a standalone is it not. Haltech?

I've done a mod or two
I take it you're running pretty reserved timing then huh? We were gonna build a turned down tune for Mike on 87 when he doesn't want all the power on tap and would prefer to burn the cheap stuff.

IIRC the AEM only retards timing and I'm pulling maybe 1-2 degrees at high boost. The Factory computer is pulling the rest VIA knock sensors.

Yeah that tracks with what I observed with the stock ECU too, it pulls a ton out of the base map. We have the ability to trim what the knock sensors read and analyze it which is nice. Right now with the Haltech and no stock computer, it is programmed to be 15-17 degrees advanced at WOT up to 7psi, but it can advance or retard from there based on the severity of knock events and that's been programmed into the knock compensation map. First counts of knock it richens a bit before pulling a ton of timing to see if that resolves. If it detects more severe knock it can retard more.

You kind of put yourself into a lower power feedback loop runnin 87 with SC on stock computer (even with AEM) though since you'll see more of the knock events that cause the stock computer to start reacting. Each degree of advance is worth roughly 10hp so it's not a metric to shrug off in favor of more boost. I'd rather run a couple less psi and run more timing advance.
