Ok so I asked this in another thread but I figured I would hit up you guys in Arizona. Helping out someone who is interested in a truck from a dealer in Arizona. He got a quote that listed an additional $1050 in license fees. This doesnt include sales tax and a $499 documentation fee which was already quoted separatley. Is this something specific to Arizona or is it just some way for the dealer to make money? The truck will be registered in another state, could this be a reason for the additional fee?

    Thanks for any help.

What year is the truck? That determines the license fee.

AZ charges Tax, title, and licensing. Your friend should not have to pay AZ tax if the vehicle is going out of state. He/she will pay tax in NV. Same for title fees. I suspect the same for licensing fees.

The dirty trick some dealers are pulling is add-ons for nothing. They call it fees, or other such nonsense. Our AG recently charge two Nissan dealerships, and each paid a $500k fine for it. I have a co-worker who bought a new-to-him car. During the process, he asked what he received for a $1500 fee. The salesman said it was fees for add-ons. He asked for the add-ons to be removed, because he did not want them (tint and paint protection, iirc). Salesman said they couldn’t be removed. Coworker brought up the online article for the AG deal. Manager agreed to give my coworker free tint and paint protection. Worth a try for your friend.

Stay away from Pinnacle Nissan in Snobsdale. I've had some really shady dealings with them recently getting them to cough up a check on a leased vehicle I sold to them. Contacted Scottsdale PD who were absolutely worthless and then emailed the local news channel "on your side." Once Pinnacle Nissan found out the cameras would be there the next morning a check suddenly appeared.:rofl:Crooks.

Doc fees are pure dealer profit and no dealer will waive or negotiate them down. I thought tax title and license were paid in the state the vehicle is registered in not where it's sold? I know there's no sales tax on private party car sales in AZ.

Are you planning on driving the vehicle to NV or trailering it there?
If they do force you to register in AZ and you have to re-register in NV you can contact AZ MVD and request a registration credit refund.

As others have mentioned in AZ they love to play the following games:

    -$50 tint for $600
    -$10 door seal for $600
-wax rubbed on car by meth head porter $600
    -forms they “click” daily $499

Being local allows you to walk away and pressure the sale the way you want. Coming from out of town you don’t have that luxury. Also 2022 soooo…..

you WILL want to check the rules for NV

for example. In CA if you buy a vehicle outside CA and take it back to CA less than 366 days you WILL be hit with some tax from the port authority and you WILL be taxed on the purchase price as if you had purchased it locally.

the scam is to register it where you buy it and transfer it at 1yr 1day or more.

    Idk about NV.

    best of luck.

Avoid pretty much every dealer in the valley. Also avoid flagstaff. Havasu dealer has been the best Toyota dealer I’ve felt with.

Thanks for the info. @DonKeyote the dealer is Anderson Toyota in Lake Havusa. Im still skeptical of the $1050 "license fee". Here is what they quoted:

    $40,000 Vehicle Price
    $1050 "Licensing Fee"
    $499 Doc Fee
    $1301.28 Taxes

Keep in mind he was offered $27K on his trade in (way underpriced). But Im still confused about why the $1050 for licensing fee if it will be registered in Nevada, wouldnt the doc fees cover all that? Plus he is already paying the $1301.28 Nevada sales tax.

You only pay sales tax on the difference between the price of the car you're buying and the value of the trade in (40,000-27,000=13,000 or $1300 as you've stated). Doc fee is associated with all the purchase paperwork and registration processing, but it's really just pure dealer profit. License fee is the registration fee. You can try the calculators below or google for others, but I still think it would be registered in NV and not AZ. Either way you can apply for a registration refund credit with MVD if you have to register it in AZ before NV. AZ registration fee on a 40k vehicle is about $700 for the first year.

@MGMDesertTaco, Thanks for the help. Since it being registered in Nevade I did some research online and estimated that the Nevada registration fees are going to be around $500-600. I still dont get charging the $1050, unless the Arizona dealer is adding the Nevada registration fees in the contract and overpricing them.

inquire on a “3 day pass” for MVD from dealer.

As far as tax, do what you can to avoid paying it twice.

If he changes his mind, I am the original owner and have meticulously maintained this guy. No accidents, plenty of upgrades
