I got 5x of these AT3 S4s in 285/70R17 in October. Now, in 7200 miles of mostly city or highway driving, 2 of them have exploded. My old ST Maxx tires lasted forever with 0 issues. Having 2 blowouts without hitting any road hazards has me thinking either I got a defective batch of tires, these aren't heavy duty enough for my truck with steel bumpers, sliders, and a roof rack, or there is something wrong with my truck?

First one was front passenger side back in November while driving 65mph on the highway. This most recent one was on my rear passenger side while driving at 50mph up a mountain pass.

I've been talking to Cooper customer service and they just said talk to the dealer (tirerack). But honestly I would feel better about figuring out what is going on. Would a reputable tire shop be able to look into any issues? I don't know what it could be. Alignment feels good. I had just rotated the tires a week or two ago and filled up to 38PSI in front and 40PSI in back before I left on my last trip.

Most likely too much PSI maybe overloaded? Only 285/70r17 for the AT3 4s is listed as a P-Metric in Standard Load. Your likely overinflating the tires which caused them to blowout. Rated for 35 PSI max, if you filled them to 38/40 (cold) and rolled down the highway for 5 miles your probably at near 42-43 PSI per tire. I'm not an expert but just throwing out an opinion.

That's weird because when I looked them up it said 36-44PSI

Any close up pics of the blown tires? What does the date stamp say?

Ahh ok. That makes sense. Mine seem to have a little more sidewall tread too but its probably due them being 34.6 in tall with 20 in wheels.

the extra sidewall tread is the XLT design. it's a bit more than the LT. which is a bit more than the 4S. :)

I went with the 4S because I wanted better traction in wintery conditions. But now I'm looking at new tires I guess

Update: Blew out a tire. 4 years old with around 60k on them. Replaced with Falken Wildpeaks and they are much better in every way. Enjoyed them while they lasted, but I love these Falkens way more.

I feel like 60k on a set of tires is really pushing it.

Not saying that it should’ve happened, just saying it’s a lot of damn miles for a set of rubber.

What is it that you like about them? I would expect brand new tires to be much better than tires with 60k on them even if they were the same flavor. Good reviews on the Falkens all around TW though. I’ve got the SUV set on my work vehicle and they’ve been just fine.

Practically silent, rides better (stiffer), and they just look better. Regardless, new tires in general have a huge impact. Thought I’d try something new. Wasn’t too keen on going back to coopers considering how it blew out and how loud they were.

Was at the dealer yesterday to purchase a set of Cooper AT3 4S in OEM size. Seemed like a good fit for what I am looking for. I don't need a dedicated off road tire. I'm in the market for an AT tire that's an upgrade from my factory Destination LEs with a more aggressive tread that won't impact my fuel mileage a whole lot.

The AT3 4S was a good fit. Price was right also. $209 Canadian (about $155 US) plus installation and taxes. I bought the tire and rim warranty from the dealer when I purchased my truck which seemed like a good deal to me. Warranty covers all national brand tires. Guy on the parts desk said Cooper was included in the tire warranty. Parts Manager overheard and said that Toyota Canada doesn't recognized Cooper as a national brand so I backed out of the purchase. Sounds like your typical dealer BS to me.

The dealer sells products which aren't allowed by Toyota Canada? Also, you might want to check your paperwork about the wheel and tire warranty. My gut says that's a 3rd party deal. I'm not an expert in any of this, but my BS meter is going off pretty strong right now.
