jacking up one side?

I am planning to rotate tires on my base 4x2 today,,can i jack up the truck in one place on the frame to do this? I tried the search option but didn't find a spacific answer there,,thanks

If you have a jack with enough travel, yes you can, just jack up the frame. But you should use 2 jack stands per side, placed at the jacking points to work on the truck once it's jacked up. NEVER get under a truck that's on a jack. Even though you won't be under the truck while rotating the tires, if it the jack slips it could still be dangerous.

 

When I rotated mine, I just jacked up the front and back independently and put jack stands underneath. You may be able to to it from the center of the frame, but I felt more comfortable doing it this way. It only takes an extra 2 min, and it's better to be safe than sorry.

I did do mine without jack stands (i'm a bit of a rusher) never had a jack fail, but I did have a couple pop off the car

 

Just cause it's worked in the past doesn't mean it's the right way to do it.

Last year I donated to family of the guy crushed by his car because jack had let go.
There are jacks with incorporated stand for faster work. truck can be lifted and if jack lets go it will get locked. Best jack/lift stands money can buy.

I had a prior jack fail once. I hadn't gotten it on the stands yet when the jack acted like I twisted the release. The vehicle just came down at a steady pace and I couldn't stop it. I could never get the jack to act up ever again. I started using the stock jacks for a long time after that until I finally got a heavier duty one that had a higher reach before I put on my AAL and 5100s. I still have the old one and used it to manipulate the LCA when installing the 5100s. But it'll never be used to lift a vehicle again, nor will I ever trust a hydraulic jack that much again.

 

Yes, you can jack up a whole side at a time if you jack can reach.

Regarding jack stand use, is your life (or important appendage), worth risking on a 10 cent o-ring? That's all that keeps that hydraulic jack in the air.

 

It only takes one time boss. The only thing btw you and death/injury is a $.50 cent O-ring.

 

I was saying it wasn't the right way to do it.. they popped off the car and that I'm stupid for doing so.


One time ( was like 17) I was under a 70 GTO when it did, luckily the engine was out (hanging from the rafters getting stabbed) and tires on, I got stuck but not crushed.. the jack handle out of reach, home alone, on an unheated garage floor in winter upstate ny. My brother stopped by to steal food about 10 long minutes later, luckily, and I got his attention.

Other time, I had used jack stands but while taking them out jack slid out from under my 06 got and went right through the coolant reservoir.

SO yea, don't get under a car without jackstands, but, if your truck falls onto a brake drum, well, it sucks, but it can happen, stay out of the way and off your ass. If you squat or stand, you'll be out of the way. I never place myself under the car or a distance it can fall without jackstands or a properly blocked lift.

well.. do all four.. just put 4 jack stands. I never do one.. that means you have to lower the spare.

But that thing is a bottle jack,,, which A: probably won't reach any components on a truck and B: takes years to pump up.
I use
Its like 2 pumps to frame, but you have to take it apart and lock tight every single bolt on it. After about a year of light use, I had a wheel fall off it, and half the bolts were backed out as far as they would go against the frame. Stainless steel into aluminum. But it weighs nothing (for its size) and jacks quickly.


Anyone know if the stock jack will fix a flat on these trucks? The old one (1st gen) would not jack to the frame and would not fit under the jacking points with a flat tire. It only worked to change a full tire on the front anyway. Or so I figured out when I came out of work and found a flat front.

 

Read my post above, I used the stock jack for a couple of years to rotate the tires. Now if you have larger than stock tires, it probably won't reach.

 

Rotating the tires one at a time would be a PITA because, as Island pointed out, you'd have to get the spare involved... Get a pair of jack stands so you can hold one side of the truck up at a time and rotate front to back. If you have 4 jack stands, no harm in putting all 4 corners up on stands and doing it in one shot. Nothing wrong with efficiency as long as you're not compromising safety.

 

whoa,,everyone missed my question,, none was asked about using jackstands (however i did use them),,,the question was poorly asked maybe, but i wanted to know if there is one point on the side of the truck that would lift both front and rear tires at the same time.
