Long time lurker and first real post. I've been in the market for a new tacoma for a while now. There is nothing on the lots or online near me and ready to give up. I'm not going to pay these outrageous markups and the used market is worse. I've considered other makes, but with supply and chip shortages, there no better. Some of the standard features will not work (heated seats, heated steering wheels, cylinder deactivation and so on). You can't even get LED headlights on the tacoma, that comes standard, without buying a package I do not want or need. I've bought everything I need to build the tacoma for overlanding, but now they might change the whole body and none of it will fit. Not excited about the 4cyl turbo either. I worked for Toyota/Mazda and I can tell you the supply chain is getting worse. I'll be surprised if there are going to be any trucks to buy next year. Thousands of trucks and cars sitting idle at plants waiting on chips. I do not see an end to this madness any time soon and ready to give up. Sorry for the rant but I had my hopes on the 3rd gen tacoma and I'm ready to give up till the market is better. Just need opinions and feedback. I know I'm not the only one in this boat.

That was a thought, but I do not need a full size truck. The new Tundra Pro is sharp.

I feel for you. I totally understand the frustration.

Are you saying that you bought the items to build the truck out before you even acquired an allocation from a dealership? If so that's a lot like putting the cart before the horse, as they say.
Not putting that down but if it were me I would have kept all those funds in my account and ordered it when I had a truck on the way for sure.

I do though think we are in for some tough times. Things are going to get worse I'm afraid before they get better. All parts of the auto industry is having supply issues. Parts to do mechanical and collision repairs are sometimes unobtainable currently.
I am even seeing that our local Wal-Mart sometimes doesn't have 0w20 oil in stock or has very low stock and prices are higher too.

There are dealerships that will sell you something for msrp you have to search them out. Check out the YouTube channel Your auto advocate and their website. My understanding is they have lists of dealerships that sell with out ADM. Maybe you can find one to work with.

Best of luck to you man.

Buy a Nissan Frontier. They are having trouble giving them away where I live. Good trucks for what they are.

I would suggest you find a dealer that won't mark up the price and give them a deposit to get an allocation. It depends on what you want on your truck but I put a deposit down in mid-February, got an allocation in about a week and received my truck in mid-April. I had to give a little on what I wanted and there were a couple of port added accesories but no big deal.

I wouldn't buy a new vehicle with the plan to modify it. I know people buy Tacomas as a base to build upon for camping and road tripping. Which isn't a bad idea for a purpose built vehicle.

If you are in the market for a vehicle because you need or want a new vehicle, buy something you are not excited about, but will do the job you bought it for. You will either save money by realizing you don't need a vehicle, or you will save money by not wanting to modify that vehicle.

Take your time and shop around.

It took me 3 months of checking dealer sites every day but I managed to snag the exact truck I wanted at MSRP with no markup.

I was exactly where you were. Not finding anything and not willing to pay some crazy markup.

But if you're vigilant, and are ready to pull the trigger when you find something, there are some deals out there.

Who buys a bunch of parts for a truck they don’t have yet? That’s not very bright.

I searched everyday like the above mentioned. I found everything I wanted which was fully loaded OR in the only color I wanted. I did pay a slight markup on msrp but only because I was unwilling to wait any longer. Several dealers I talked to said msrp and one called me to say they got the truck I wanted in a different color but all the options I wanted a week after I bought mine. Don’t give up just yet.

    Still thinking about it.
So says the Nissan owner. One might ask who buys a truck that nobody makes parts for? ;)

I’d love to say I’m some type of avid off-roader, but I’m not. And this certainly wouldn’t be my first choice for strictly off-road vehicle. In fact the most off-road I really have gone in the last few years is just some muddy trails/roads going to someone’s cabin or going shooting. Mostly just an overkill vehicle to get me back and forth to work. But it’s so much better than my 3rd gen was :bananadead:

Bought a part here and there over the years. Did not foresee this pandemic happening. I can sell parts if I have to. Dealers with there markups and add-ons piss me off to the core. I hate dealing with them let alone dealing with several all over the Southeast. I just want a Tacoma OR without any add-ons to build the way I want. YAA is a great site and I have watched plenty of there videos. There is a reason Nissans are sitting on lots and I'm not a fan of them. I've noticed that some of the automakers are letting the consumer buy straight from them instead of the dealer, or so it seems. Maybe this is what needs to happen. Maybe have brand dealers with small lots with cars to inspect and test drive and you order what you want from the automakers. Dealers could still have service departments for service and warranty issues. Pretty much delete the middle man on new cars. Used market is still open to the dealers. Sell your used car to the dealers and either buy used from them or put the money towards new when you order. Get rid of the cat and mouse games they like to play. The auto industry needs an overhaul.

Not sure what's wrong with the turbo 4 cylinder. It's basically the same as a V6 with better low-end torque and works better at elevation.

You will be able to find a Tacoma you want without a market adjustment but you have to be willing to travel.

Why in the world would you buy mods for a truck you don’t have yet? That’s a completely unforced error.

There are a lot of convoluted laws which won't allow that to happen. A lot of the right to repair discussion that is going on right now has the auto industry immune to it. I won't go into the details but there are a few videos on YouTube about it. It's also why Tesla's are technically illegal to buy in many states since they don't have any actual dealerships. It's unfortunate.
