I'm going to do a transmission fluid and filter replacement and saw a package deal for everything I need to do it. Which comes with oil, filter, gasket, and washers. The only thing I'm unsure about is the oil which is Ravenol transmission oil and it says it's compatible with Toyota transmissions. I wanted to know if anyone here has used it and if there would be any issues using it.

I'm curious what filter this kit comes with? From what I understand, there is no filter...just a screen that isn't really required to be serviced. Ravenol is a decent brand of fluid tho.

    Use the correct Toyota ATF.

Replace automatic transmission fluid - inspect every 30k or 36 mo (severe: replace every 60k or 72 mo)
Factory Service Manual Doc ID: RM000004LXE00TX

    Torque specs:
    Drain plug - 180 lb-in/15 lb-ft (14mm)
    Overflow plug - 180 lb-in/15 lb-ft (5mm hex)
    Fill plug - 29 lb-ft (24mm or 15/16")

    Parts:
Toyota ATF WS fluid - Toyota part # 00289-ATFWS
Drain plug gasket - Toyota part # 35178-30010
Overflow plug gasket - Toyota part # 35178-30010
Fill plug gasket - Toyota part # 90301-15004

    Special tools:
Toyota SST 09843-18040 (basically you just need a wire to jumper two OBD ports)
Bottle pump (to use for filling)

I used amsoil atf because I had a great experience using their fluid in my old ford escape with a failing transmission. I know it's safer to use Toyota brand fluid but I really like Amsoil's products and they've yet to let me down. As long as the fluid is compatible, it should be fine.

Replacing the filter is a bit more involved, you will have to drop the pan to access it.

For something as critical, and hugely expensive as the auto transmission, that seldom needs its fluid changed, why even experiment?

The Toyota WS stuff is not prohibitively expensive, and will be compatible with the factory fill, which there is no way to completely remove.

    Just my two bits.

    This is the Filter:
    https://toyotaparts.mcgeorgetoyota.com/oem-parts/toyota-transmission-filter-3533004010

I would not mix different fluids in your Tranny (so use the Toyota WS Fluid).

The Pan Gasket is re-useable, so you will not need one. But if you want one, here it is:
    https://toyotaparts.mcgeorgetoyota.com/oem-parts/toyota-pan-gasket-3516804010

You will also need two crush washers - one for the Drain Plug, and one for the Overflow Plug (for the level-check procedure) - they are both the same size.

The Fill Plug has a Rubber O-Ring washer that is re-useable.

There are a few threads here regarding this procedure. Use the search function, and read up on it before you get started. And watch the u-toob vids too.

I've always been a fan of Redline. They now have D6 ATF (Toyota WS).

I can’t quite help but being suspicious of these claims of “swiss army knife” oil. I agree Redline is a quality brand, but this stuff seems like one of those restaurants that does Sushi, Pizza, Burgers, Chinese, Tacos, Greek etc, and none of them well.

How can it be all these things in one bottle?

Just has to meet the specs. I'm more into changing diffs and trans to redline and never changing again. Crazy enough, I'll bet many owners never change their diff or trans fluids from factory.

I used valvoline max life did 6 drain and fills (about 24 quarts total) and a filter change (there is indeed a filter you need to change) to replace the oem fluid at 80k. I didn't like the fact that most of the brands could not be found at the average parts store. If I ended up low on fluid far from home I didn't want to have to hunt around for a special fluid or a toyota dealership to refill. The maxlife can be found at most stores and has a good reputation provided you change the filter, clean the pan/magnets and fully change the fluid. About 5k now with no issues.

24 quarts? Holy moly…..that’s getting expensive and for what quantifiable benefit? To each his own.

About 5 bucks a quart if the buy the jug, so its very cheap. Most ws I find is 10 or 12 bucks the red line is 15 and other aren't any cheaper and unless you want to do a flush (not recommended) Its the only way to totally replace the fluid.
