Modifed 5th gen 4 runner calipers for 1st gen tacomas (14wa)

$400 is the price for the product, with shipping, and insurance, via usps

You're going to need 17 inch wheels to clear the calipers

You can retain the original brake line setup but you will need a shorter banjo bolt or cut the original one down than fix the threads with a file... not a big deal

I only have 4 pairs, dm for additional questions or inquiries

You will need to supply your own pads and rotors (meant for a 2012 toyota 4 runner) to complete the upgrade

The ones that have been done for years are 13wl calipers

I can get some photos comparing the 14wa caliper vs the 13wl caliper but don't have the 14wa rotors or pads on hand right now

The 14wa rotor is larger in diameter and significantly thicker than the 13wl

Well that's fascinating, good find. I think this is the first I've seen of another big brake upgrade other than the 13WL's.

 

It’s a thing pioneered by the tundra/sequoia guys. Since the brake system is the same as a 1st gen taco it seems logical to see the swap on these too at some point. That being said, 17” wheels are a must.

 

I’m no brake genius, so can someone explain to me if this is better than the tundra brake upgrade and if so, why? Thanks

 

What was modified? curious they bolt up to 2nd gens without changes. Did you need to modify the mounts? I’m not as familiar with the first gen setup.

But they should bolt up to 2nd gens no probleno

 

The rotors have more ventilation so they shed heat faster, great for towing, bigger tires, stopping downhill... or a combination

The caliper pistons are larger so a greater area of the pad is receiving clamping force

That being said the ratio of pedal travel and brake force is technically skewed but I did the swap on my tundra whose booster and master are meant for 13wls and I notice no problem

14WB - Utilizes the exact same specs as the 14WA with the exception of 14mm mounting bolt. You can sleeve your 12mm mounting bolts with 2mm sleeves and have the same. However, if you start sourcing or calling around and find a GX or 4Runner 15-present, be careful since there was a model break in 2015.

 

They bolt up fine. Thread I set up a while ago. I was curious on how it fits on the 1st if its not direct.

I'm really interested but I'm not sure if it is worth the upgrade for me since I already have the 13wl. Has anyone here went from the 13wl to the 14wa and would like to talk about their experience?

 

the piston plus the rotor differences are pretty significant. Maybe somebody has made the switch but I think a double baffle booster would help as well.

 

@zippsub so I should upgrade the brake booster as well?

 

I wouldn’t say it is mandatory and you should probably also upgrade the master cylinder while you are there. It would be essential if you were converting the rear to disc because of the extra fluid movement. However, a tundra/sequoia booster and master is easy to source and would compliment these well since that is what they come on stock.

 

its hit or miss in the tundras if you end up with a soft pedal or not. most people end up with a decent upgrade.

tundra uses the same master and booster as the newer 1st gen tacomas. (unless its got VSC) some people swap in the T100 booster and master though. early 1st gen tacos thats really easy to do with the 4 bolt master already on those.
