Update from my post a couple months ago about the Baja bumper with the TSS pro grille. Mike from CBI reached out and let me know that wasn’t how it was supposed to look or feel tight.

shout out to Mike and CBI for fixing the issue ( resending me a new bumper at their expense and taking the old one)

new bumper installed and it looks better! No longer a tight fit, no issues with the TSS.

I see that this is an older thread, but thought that I'd share a couple of pics of my Tacoma build.

I have CBI front and rear bumpers, CBI skid plates, and CBI armor under the truck. Everything is very high quality, minus the powder coat, and I do recommend CBI. Their customer support is really great. If you can catch a sale, CBI definitely is a solid option.

Nice setup, Unburned. The CBI bumpers look great. I've been contemplating installing a similar CBI rear bumper/swing-out. Some of the other brands require cutting into the side panel. I really like how clean yours looks. It appears to be a true bumper replacement, that flows nicely with the lines of the Tacoma side panels. Without cutting?

    Thanks Brandi.

I went with that particular CBI rear bumper because it did not require any cutting. The install was easy...just had to disconnect the sensors in the OEM bumper, pull it off, and bolt-on the CBI bumper. The biggest pain though was installing the two swing-outs...not difficult, just need to pound them down onto the spindles. CBI has a very good install video, so I just followed that. Here is a link to the video...it is not for the bumper that I have because it shows cutting, but it was close enough. The swing-out install starts at 28:45. You'll see at 33:33 the installer uses a plastic part to assist with seating the swing-outs onto the spindles...that part is not included in the kit that CBI sends...it was just some random leftover part that he used. I ended up using a piece of PVC pipe with a PVC cap on one end, which worked OK, but it did eventually break, so I needed to make another one...got the job done though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOYM8TEyLR8

Hey Unburned, thanks for the great info! Holy cow...the swingout install is definitely a task in that video. I had watched a different video prior, attached below. It didn't look too bad...maybe I was distracted by the bad (boy) humor. The install of swing out at 37:50. Using a piece of capped PVC is a good idea for the final tap in.

Did you relocate your rear camera somehow? The Backwoods Adventure swing-out incorporates a location in the bumper for the camera; but no attachment on bumper for license plate. Are you using the hinged CBI license plate attachment? Curious if it allows the plate to rattle against bumper (or against hitch when using) since there is not a spring attachment to hold it in each position, I think.

    Hey bls4x4,

The install of the bumper and swing-outs is pretty straightforward. Other than the need to pound the swing-outs in place, it is pretty easy, and the pounding is not tough to do.

CBI makes a camera relocation kit: https://cbioffroadfab.com/product/3rd-gen-tacoma-rear-bumper-camera-relocation-bracket/. Moving the camera was easy...just had to remove the tailgate panel, unscrew the camera, then route the camera wires down to the CBI-provided bracket...done. It was easy and works great. I fit a rubber grommet into the hole left by the camera in the tailgate to keep dust/dirt out...worked well, and it is not noticable.

I am using the CBI license plate hinge. It does not rattle. I am able to move the license plate up out of the way to get a tow bar into the receiver in the CBI bumper.

One thing to add regarding the trailer wiring harness. The OEM harness is not long enough to reach the opening in the CBI bumper as explained in the video at 2:45. I opted to use an after-market harness to extend the OEM harness: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009FJ38Q?ie=UTF8. This worked perfectly and I didn't need to do any wiring...just plug and play. That said, the harness is a bit long, but a few zip ties solved that problem.

Great tips, Unburned! Thank you for sharing your experience and sources. I've read a lot of ideas on how to extend the harness. Yours makes a lot of clean sense.

Much food for thought. I'll be triggering soon. Of course, there comes the product creep with a "matching" spare and rim and....

Does anyone have the full hoop adventure bumper on a stock height 3rd gen tacoma? I’m trying to decide whether to get a lift first or just pull the trigger on the bumper.

I'd do a lift first, but make sure you get the correct spring rate for the added weight of the bumper and winch if you're adding one.

I have a different bumper and a different gen truck, but I did the bumper/winch first, which added too much weight for the stock springs. Handling went to shit, especially when braking. I had to add Sumo spring stiffeners as a stop-gap measure until I could afford to upgrade the suspension.

Thank you both! I’ll probably opt for the aluminum version once I’m ready but will do a winch, so that is a lot of added weight. I’ll plan on doing a lift with the appropriate coils first.

Get the synthetic winch line. It'll save you about 70lbs and is soooo much easier to use.
