Someone ask about Kona coffee sold at the ABC stores are pure Kona coffee? I do not know.
There is a company now in Kona that can test where the coffee came from. But not sure how and who they are testing. New company.

Wow you must have spent a lot of time in the military. This is an insult to those who have served to provide the freedoms we enjoy today.

I was a cook in the National guard , for me a it was hard work but enjoyable. Our unit was small , 150 men , a head quarters field depot unit.
The summer camps two weeks long, up at 4:00 am and sleep at 10:00 pm. Worst when we had to move to different locations. And re-set up. Looking back it was fun.

As cooks , we had to learn how to fire every weapon in camp. I love the M-60 and M-79 grenade launcher.

Mods? We don't need no stinking mods.
Can't you legally market "Kona coffee" with as little as 10% Kona beans? I thought I read that many years ago.

Too bad they don't have a 51% requirement! I don't mind if they market it as "Kona" coffee, but they should provide the percentage of each type of beans.

From what I just read, I'll never buy Kona coffee beans because you are far more likely to receive something other than Kona for Kona's price. Guess this is Hawaii "sticking it to the haoles" on the mainland...lol

Laws are made by man, man is not perfect, there for you will get imperfect laws.

Hawaii rules allow 10% pure Kona coffee be allowed , and sold as “Kona Coffee Bend!”

Over the years people here wanted to increase the amount to a larger percentage. 15% and as high as 51%.
    ——-
Those companies that are buying coffee from other parts of the world, to make 10% bends, found people cannot tell the difference, hence many so call pure Kona coffee is sold , is really NOT Kona coffee.
The profits is “HUGE”. Black markets!

In Hawaii , 20 million pounds sold as pure Kona coffee, Kona land area can only produce 3 million pounds of pure Kona beans. In a good year.

17 millions pounds of coffee is illegally sold as pure Kona coffee!
Figures comes from Hawaii Taxation Offices.

“Caveat Emptor”. Let the buyer beware….

Good rule of thumb for coffee: If there is no roast date on the package it's probably not the best coffee. If it does have a roast date but that date is more than two weeks ago it's probably not worth buying.

Fresh coffee is good coffee. Black Rifle and many other big roasters won't be supplying the freshest beans. There's probably a small local roaster making fine beans close to you.

I suppose it depends if you're looking for good coffee first or looking to support something first.

    Posted on the internet.
Fresh roast coffee, whole beans 7-21 days stay fresh, but coffee bag with air vent can last for years.
Fresh roasted ground coffee 7 days it will have its freshness. But with coffee bag for years.

Coffee store in air tight containers never really goes bad. Whole beans or ground.

Brew coffee 15 minutes -hour, airtight container a bit longer.

Manufactories do not like posting the roasted date, impact the sales. Many times NO expiration dates, impact the sales too.

I have an even better suggestion for fresh coffee. Buy green beans and roast them yourself. I've been doing it for several years now, and I'll never buy "roasted" beans again. The only exception is a local coffee roaster. That is about as fresh as doing it yourself, but 50%+ more expensive.

I've roasted with a popcorn maker and skillet in the past but my local roaster still does a nicer job and sells beans relatively cheap. I also don't have to worry about stinking up the house while trying to roast in the winter. Roasted beans smell amazing.... Roasting beans smells terrible.

It's a fun project to get into though.

I bought an inductive hot plate and a SS popcorn popper. I take my rig outside when I roast because of the roasting smell...lol

So there is a small roaster in Fort Worth, his wife travels and buys from growers a couple times a year and they fill in with brokers from some of the trouble spots where it might be dangerous. Rodaks, last time I went by he took me on a walk through. 50# burlap sacks of green beans labeled with origin. You tell him what you want, he measures them out and roasts them while you wait and watch.

So the burlap bags keep well?

I need to go back by there. I stopped because I was calling on a customer in the area and was intrigued by a sign that said auto diagnostics/coffee roaster. LOL

More kona sold than is grown doesnt surprise me, Olive oil sold is like 2 1/2 times the amount produced. I think the key is to buy local from a reputable source. Too much hype in marketing products theses days with people whose identity is tied to the products they buy.

Caveat Emptor- Buyer beware…..even green beans can be old! After the pulping process, coffee beans needs to be dry, couple of methods. Two popular drying ways are “ sun dry” and “gas dryer”.

After reaching a certain moisture readings, then off to a mill to remove the paper covering the bean. Once you remove the paper cover, then sorted by size and quality.

Note: The coffee with the paper on is refer to as the “coffee patch”. And is store in bags. Often can be for months- years? The smaller mills may have a harder time selling?

After the milling , What’s left is a green bean , ready to be roasted. Green beans can last up to a year.
Green bean ship can be a long journey before getting roasted.

We do not sell green beans. We are a tiny farm, sell only what we raise, bless we sell out almost every year. Before we start harvesting again. Next month.

Hope you understand this ? Just because you have green coffee beans and produce your own fresh roast? Doesn’t mean it will taste “good”? Where those green beans came from? And the age of the green beans?

Even in Kona Coffee , no two farms may have the same taste or flavor.

Even us, it is very hard to tell the difference between our own coffee. The one just roasted or ones a bit older.

A couple times a year there are coffee cupping contest, ( pay to enter) , often different winners each year.
You also get different judges. Each with there own taste.

If you enjoy what you are drinking? This is good. If you find another better tasting brand? Switch!

Think of coffee flavors like wine. The same grapes in one region do not all ways taste the same.
Kona coffee , different farms, the taste is not the same.

Getting green beans doesn’t mean better tasting? Or A fresh roasted vs a few months old roasted. Not too many people can tell the difference in taste?

Something to think about? Where the green bean came from? , how old?

Taste of coffee? Coffee comes in many grades too. Some claims the peaberry is the best ? What is peaberry ?
A whole bean (more rounded) , majority of coffee grown , one cherry bean will have two halves. Once an awhile. ,the cherry will form a whole bean.

Many will say it tastes better? Note when they process and sort? Usually by sizes , the peaberry can be smaller. Falls in the small bean category. Meaning the smaller coffee beans (so call less desire) is often mix with peaberry. There is not a lot of peaberry . Yet you will see manufacturers selling large amounts of so called peaberry.
Can you taste the difference between a large apple, and a smaller apple from the same tree?

Most coffee farms will use the smaller coffee bean for grounds. The larger beans will be sold as whole beans, more appealing! Also the off grades are use as grounds, off grades will taste just as good too.

I am not a expert. I just pick the coffee. But keep my ears open.

Darker the roast , the less caffeine, the more bitter it can taste. Note: Some farms , I can’t drink there coffee no matter how they roasted it.

Peaberry, a large ,and smaller coffee bean from the same tree? Think of it like eating a large fish and a smaller fish of the same species? Can you taste the difference.

Yes there are people in the world with great taste “buds”. I not one of them.
Watermelons all taste the same to me.
