This is how it looks after driving a little over 20 miles, so the engine is very hot here...

I check my oil with the engine cool after it has set for a few hours.
Then pull the stick, wipe it down, reinsert it, pull it back out and check.

Sure you can check it warm, but I like for all the oil to run down in the pan to give me a more accurate reading. Plus, heat rises and I don’t like fooling around under the hood when the engine is warm if I don’t have to.

    Hard to tell.
    It’s smeared up the stick.

Looks likes it’s in the middle if I were to use my best judgement looking at the photo.

either measure cold on first pull of the stick. Or if hot after its been shutdown for awhile (oil does have to drain back to the pan). Pull the stick out, wipe it off, LEAVE IT OUT for 5 min or so for the oil to drain back down the tube. Insert all the way and pull out to check.

The problem you see there is there is oil from running or previously pulled out wet dipstick that gives all sorts of false readings on the stick as it has oil on it from inside the dipstick tube.

Mobil One 10W30 full synthetic high mileage formula; Switching to the same oil but in 5W30 next oil change since we are coming up on fall/winter and I won't be driving as much; I want lower weight in case it's really cold, and I reckon I won't be hitting 160K until after it gets below freezing. On another note, diff fluid needs to be changed at 160K...

Using a quart in 3500 miles is not ideal but not really a problem. But if that is all it is I don't understand why you have to top it off twice a week?? Should need that only once or twice between oil changes.

It occured to me I have no idea if you have any interest in other vehicles, but I managed to find one of these. Been taking it to work lately.

The same reason I don't drink Bud Light... :D

0W20 is too thin and doesn't come in high-mileage formula.

Okay, well I've never seen it stocked at any store, and I had a bad experience ordering oil online before; I ordered it on Amazon and it literally made it to a UPS distribution center in Horsham, PA (right down the road from me) before I got a notification that it had been deemed "undeliverable". The oil was shipped back to the seller and I got my money back, but I still pissed...

    :annoyed:

I was told by other TW members that I probably shouldn't be running 0W20 in a vehicle with this many miles; Also, the filler cap on my truck says it can take 0W20 or 5W20. After talking to TW members and family friends who are current and former mechanics, as well as my current mechanic, I made the jump to 10W30 sometime in mid-2021 after using a 5W20 for a while; I have been using 10W30 since 130K miles (I am currently a little over 153K now) with no issues other than the fact that my truck is still "using" oil. Before (A) switching to a heavier oil and (B) replacing the PCV valve, my truck was using oil at a rate of roughly one quart every 3,500 miles; After the PCV replacement, this went down drastically. I also discovered earlier this year that there was seepage from the cam cover gasket and I had that replaced.
