Half of my serpentine belt shredded today. It then wrapped around the fan and whipped around beating some coolant hoses loose and ripping some wires out. I got all of the coolant system put back together and refilled, and was able to plug all the wires back in enough to get home, but I would like to replace a few electrical connectors that are damaged. Can anyone tell me what these are and the best way to replace them?

Top one is thermostat, they are in big demand, and expensive sadly. Is the plastic damaged or just the wiring?

Bottom one is the oil pressure sender, all you need is the connector there thankfully.

Dang, my serpentine shredded yesterday. No damage like yours but the wires from mine wrapped around the pulleys and fan, it was a bear to get it all out.

Check inside the crank pulley as well, I saw a 3.5 once drag a belt so badly through the pulley that it ate into the timing cover. Huge bill.

    Bad luck.

Did you hear any squealing from your belt before this happened or did it just randomly rip apart? Just curious because I heard squealing from mine when it was on its way out.

Those that have problems with the serpentine belt, what was your mileage?

That is what mine looked like. Spent 30 minutes in a parking lot with needle nose pliers pulling it all out so I could limp across the street to an Autozone.

Nope. Heard a loud pop when it went (which I think was actually the pressure relase from a coolant hose that got ripped off), but nothing before that. Only half the belt failed, the other half stayed working and was enough for me to drive a couple miles before I noticed the coolant leak.

Oddly, the reported engine temp on the dash stayed normal and I did not get any check engine lights nor does anything show up pulling diagnostic codes. Now that I have it back in my garage, it looks like both were damaged on the wire harness side and not the sensor side. A little careful reassembly and a dab of super glue and both seem to be back to good.

For anyone else that has had their belt explode, anything else get damaged I should be looking for?

Not on the Tacoma, but my Olds Achieva had the belt tensioner puke and the belt got sheared down the middle (fortunately, versus the way it seems some of the pictures look). Only about 60K on that one. I was going maybe 20mph getting ready to turn into my building. Immediately lost the steering assist and got the battery light.

That raises another interesting question: how strong should the tensioner on a Tacoma be? I was expecting to need a breaker bar to take the tension off the belt, but I ended up using a 6" chepo socket wrench... I wonder if mine is too weak and that contributed to the belt failure.

Not sure but I have never needed a breaker to do the swap. I used either a socket and ratchet or a wrench to do mine 2 years ago, I forget.

I checked them all throughly, no other sticking bits.

It took a while to get all the bits out, there were a few wrapped around my motor mount too.
Only half of mine went too, the other half got me home. Was it an aftermarket belt or OEM? Mine was a Continental.

Maintenance Bulletin- change your bets early and often. Two extra changes over the life of your truck will cost you about $100. Too cheap to try and get max life from a belt.

My belt started making noises around 65k, I replaced it at 70k. When I did I was so thankful as there were two places where the belt looked almost "cut" 2-3 of the way through. Only a (short) matter of time before mine shredded itself. Now I keep an extra and will replace at least every 50k unless I hear anything before. Easy job, just take your time getting the belt around the fan

From the looks of this mess, how much water did this motor go through? Appears its been getting wet for sometime looking at the rust on the hose clamp. No belt is going to put up with that crap.

Original OEM belt. I just checked it last month when I did an oil change and it looked fine (no nicks, rubber still good, no exposed fibers).
