3rd Gen DIY maintenance quick reference

I have two zerks on 2019 TRD sport. 4WD

 

Question about getting some new equipment since I just had my last free service.

I have ramps drain pans and oil filter wrenches and all kinds of regular hand tools.
What I feel like I don't have the stuff to do is get the truck up to rotate tires at home.

I found a few options
2 ton jack & stands.

3 ton set with creeper. I have a Stone driveway so not sure how useful that would be but it's 3 ton

I use discount tire, where I live in Michigan. They do free rotations whether you bought from them or not. I just recheck the torques when I get home. Great company.

 

That's awesome. We don't have any of those stores here in Pennsylvania. I used take the old Jeep Liberty to a little country tire place, they would do it for $1 per wheel moved if you bought your tires there. That was a great deal but I started to see loose or missing lug nuts so I stopped going there.
I got my Tacoma a set Cooper discoverer AT tires from Walmart. I'll have to see if they offer any kind of deal. I may have paid for lifetime rotations already. I have to check my recipt. The Shrewsbury location seemed to have good employees when I got the tires.

I'd check.I know Walmarts here will rotate for free if you bought them there. Just remember to check your lugnut torque yourself afterwards.

 

A 2 ton MIGHT not lift the front off the ground. Mine won't, the suspension doesn't max out before the jack reaches its highest point.

I would go with a 3 ton jack, and 2 jack stands. A quality 1/2 inch drive torque wrench, 1/2 inch drive extension, 21 mm socket, 1/2 drive ratchet or breaker bar, wheel chocks, and a small air compressor for adjusting your air pressures.

Check out the unijacks on Amazon. I have 2 and love them.

 

Thanks. That is what I wasn't sure about with the 2 ton jack if it could even lift the truck.

I think I'm going to go with the prolift set that comes with 3 ton jack, 2 stands and the creeper. The creeper may not roll on the gravel driveway but maybe I can still use it to lay on something other than cardboard.

I did pick up a 1/2 socket set, trque wrench 24in long 1/2" breaker bar last year at harbor freight, I know thats not the greatest quality stuff but it seems to work for as hard as I use it. I have a 12v compressor so I just need some wheel chocks.

 

i would recommend removing and inspecting the cabin air filter every year especially if you park under trees. i put a new one in but the original looked pretty good. i had an unbelievable amount of debris resting on top of my cabin air filter after less than a year owning the truck. had a nasty mildew smell too from the rotting leaves/tree gunk.

 

I saw this thread yesterday afternoon, and the discussion of tightening U-bolts reminded me of reading this maintenance thread when I first got the truck and how I never checked my U-bolts.
When I got home from work I got the torque wrench out and tightened all the nuts on the U-bolts to 73 ft lbs as recommended by several people in the linked thread. They felt fairly tight already, but each nut still turned ~1/4 to 1/2 turn before clicking.

A couple questions came to mind afterward:

1. After 22k miles, how do I know everything was in the right place when I tightened them? Could things have shifted and now I tightened them down in less than ideal alignment?
2. I didn't check back to this thread until this morning and see that everyone here says 52 ft lbs, not 73. Should I loosen them and re-torque to 52 ft lbs? Will they fail at 73?

Reading this thread yesterday caught my attention because I've had a light vibration while braking the entire time I've owned the truck. Not enough to seem like a problem, but present none the less. This morning on my drive to work, although only 6 miles, I did not have the braking vibrations anymore. So it seems like tightening the U-bolts did the trick.

 

Can someone help me locate the propeller shaft grease points? Guess I'm a dummy.

Mine are only on the front shaft.
So yours may not have any.

 

One more newb question..... for tire rotation on page one of this thread it says back to front/front to back. Growing up I remember being taught fronts go straight back but then you swap the backs to the other side going to the front. Is that not the recommended way for the taco?

 

Do what you want for tire rotation, just keep it consistent.

 

This is how I rotate my tires, swap sides when the back go to the front. I've seen many people post about using this method as well. Good advice above about being consistent and go with that.

 

Manual says 100k miles for trans fluid change but want to do it at 60k miles since I tow my camper from time to time. I noticed that many of you do this service pre 60k but unfortunately I can't go back in time so this is my best option.

Question:
What is the overall consensus on fluid drain vs dropping the pan? Also what is the recommendation for me now at 60k and going into the future. If I do a drain I will definitely do it three times. Thanks for the info.

Does anyone know all of the part numbers differences for OEM toyota 0w-20 engine oils?

When I search them on the parts.toyota.com website it gives 5-6 "bulk" results with various $13-$15 costs and another 5-6 different results with $3-5 prices that appear to be priced per quart.

I've called the dealership and their parts department was no help at all.

Specifically looking for the highest grade of the toyota OEM engine oil in bulk & per quart. Their part descriptions are no help.
